Use DX11, not DX12. The DX12 code path results in less performance.
Really? A lot of people on the Rise of the Tomb Raider Steam Forum are reporting improved performance in DirectX 12 mode. I was just going to suggest switching to DirectX 12 mode. Of course, if he is experiencing these issues in DX12 it would make sense to give DX11 a try.
One confirmed problem with Rise of the Tomb Raider is SLI does not currently work in DX12 mode. It does work in DX11 mode. As someone else pointed out, you don't have to remove the second 980 Ti from your PC to disable SLI though. Just go into Nvidia Control Panel and disable SLI. You really shouldn't even have to disable it because DX12 in this game just ignores your second card.
On average, from reviews I've seen, DX12 costs a good 10-15 FPS.
On Nvidia cards it looks like the performance is pretty similiar in DX11 and DX12 with DX11 being a couple FPS better. The numbers you are reporting hold true for AMD cards though. They see a bigger drop in DX12 performance.
Edit: Even though performance is slightly lower in DX12 on a 980 Ti I still think it would be worth the time to test it if he is currently experiencing these problems in DX11. If he is currently experiencing the problems in DX12 it's obviously worth trying DX11 to see if things improve.
From my own personal experience I tried DX12 mode when it was first released via steam update, and it was near unplayable on my GTX 980. Switching back to DX11 again and all was well.
Maybe i'll give it another go since a few more updates have been pushed out.
i switched from the evga 980 ti's i had to a single 980 ti hybrid and the issue i had is gone now i think my gpu was getting to hot and downclocking which caused low fps. !Thanks everyone for assistance!
