Hi All,

Has anyone had any luck getting an RMA from ECS for a faulty motherboard? I
sent them a tech. support question describing the problem (bad caps) and
asked how do I get it fixed. I'm doing this more as a curiosity than
anything else. I might fix the board myself, but I wanted to see what ECS
would do first...

Has anyone had a mobo repaired from ECS under warranty?

ECS won't take RMA's from end users.
So unless you can take it back to where you bought it...and they
honor the warranty, you're probably out of luck.

I bought it from ZipZoomFly.com...and they won't take it back unless it's in
the 30 day window...

30 days is zipzoomfly's 'return policy' (which isn't the 'waranty',
per see) but they are also the 'provider' for ECS warranty claims. You
return to zipzoomfly and they do their RMA thing with ECS.

Thanks for the info...I didn't know that. I'll try them and see what
happens...

No offense meant, but have you considered the cost of shipping,
plus the time lost dickin' around with removing and replacing the
old m/b over just replacing it with a new one?

None taken...

Yes, I have. As I said in my original post, I was asking this more as a
curiosity than anything else. This is the second of 3 K7S5A's that have
failed me, and the third (the computer I'm typing on now) shows visible
signs of the same failure. (bad caps) I can fix it myself, as a
hobby/soldering practice and can get the parts in a day or two to fix it.
Time spent would be for fun of fixing. The board has been replaced already
with an Asus A7N8X Deluxe Refurb in the other box, so the board and it's
"older brother", a v3.1, are just sitting around right now. One is
technically still under warranty, and I was just curious...

Well, on a positive note, I contacted ZipZoomFly and they issued me an RMA.
We'll see what happens and how long it takes, and what I actually get
back...I'll use it as a Kids computer if and when it comes back...

On a negative note, my 3rd out of 3 K7S5A boards has just died. Same
problem, only the CPU power supply FET's are shot, due to thermal runaway,
probably because of the caps. going bad. This one is an older one, and out
of warranty...

I haven't had good luck with ECS as far as the K7S5A is concerned...3 out of
3 dead over the last 2 years...My first board, v3.1 lived 14 months, my
second board, a Pro v5.0 lived 15 months, and my 3rd board, another Pro v5.0
lived 8 months...(not all consecutively)

I think I'm moving to Asus from now on...

Good luck to the group, and hopefully ECS can get it's act together
someday...

What processors you running in them?

I have a K7S5A Pro but I wouldn't buy another one. There are known
problems that ECS just simply ignores over every rev level they've
done. Most infamous being the spontaneous lost CMOS parameters for no
reason.

Check their message board. You will find hundreds of dissatisfied
users complaining about service and product reliability.

My K7S5A Pro v5.0 cost $84.95 including a 2200 processor from fry's
in August of 2003. It lost cmos twice. I'm happy with it.

Well, I was able to get ZipZoomFly.com to take my board back and
rework/replace it. It will probably take 3 to 4 weeks at best..

And...as discussed elswhere in this thread, my 3rd K7S5A blew up on me. The
bad caps. near the CPU power supply caused the FET's to FRY. So, now I'm 3
for 3 with these boards for failures. This final one is out of warranty,
so I will probalby get 1 replaced under warranty, and the other two get to
contaminate my local trash dump...

Unfortunately, the "Fry"ing of the FET's caused the Power supply to die also
(not sure why, probably over current) and I lost (for some reason) my Hard
Drive also. (It won't spin up at all!) I have had to rebuild my Dual boot
SuSE Linux and XP box from scratch. I had backups of the XP, but not of
the Linux.

I'll post back when I get the board back from ZZF...

Until then, "Asus"ing I will go...

Well, I got the board back from ZZF yesterday. Brand New Board. I've since
migrated the box to an Asus A7N8X. I'll either keep the board for another
build later, or up on eBay...

Either way...the board was replaced within the warranty period.
