Robotron: Weird!

Interesting. I'm assuming that for the Robotron, Joust, etc. machines,
Williams designed these widget boards separate from the main PCB due to
the high failure rate. Obviously this configuration isn't common in
other vids.

Naw. If they knew ahead of time the parts had a high failure rate, I bet they'd
have picked something else. The main reason behind this type of design is
serviceability. Much easier to swap individual boards out and swap a known good
one in, than have everything on one board.

It's designed that way because that's how williams was used to designing
stuff... they did pinballs, not vids.

That's why gottliebs are the monsters they are too :)

5/4/05 UPDATE AND PROBLEM RESOLUTION:

Many thanks to Steve Muccione for a new widget board (!!) and others
for their textual contributions in order to help resolve this problem.
Here is a snippet of my email to Steve with the resolution:

"tried it out last night and it looks like it's working fine. In fact,
no more cocktail mode problems (if you remember, I have an upright and
with MY widget board it was flipping the screen around for player 2!).
I tested it by jumping the i/o pins on board since I haven't yet
rebuilt my control panel (I plan on doing this tonight). I can even
start a one-player game; previously I could only get a two-player game
to start."

Other problems with my widget board included player one and player two
FIRE DOWN stuck on.

With the widget board NOT connected it shows ALL Switches as CLOSED or "ON"
So in the diagnostic list, all the switches are turned on.
