[SOLVED] Router and modem recommendations

Hi all,

Common wisdom on this group and other online forums is to get a separate modem and router rather than a combo (what I have right now). I am planning to get the 1000mbs connection from Comcast and I need to get new equipment to support this plan.
I have around 10 devices at home and only one of them will be wired. All the other devices will be using Wi-Fi. For that reason, I would like to hear your experiences on the options available. My house is 1,760 Sq Ft.

I am also considering buying a TP-Link AV600 Powerline for my second computer and smart TV. But only if I have bad experience after buying the new equipment. I also have the NETGEAR Wi-Fi Range Extender EX3700 as a backup

On the router I would favor the Netgear. Both of the modems are good and either should perform well -- I've used both.

If you buy a powerline adapter I would not go with anything less than an AV2-1000 or better, the older one you listed is too slow. The newer AV2 use the ground plug for MIMO and are faster and lower latency.

When I upgraded to Comcast Gigabit, I bought the Motorola MB8600, it has been rock solid and reliable. No complaints here, and I get full gigabit speeds, about 960+mbps when I do xfinity speedtest.

Netgear firmware in the last few years has gone downhill, tons of problems. I would probably stay away from netgear, and I used to be a fan of theirs back in the day.

I've never heard of Speedefy, so I can't comment on them.

1,700 square feet is kind of on the line for where I would want 2 access points in the house, especially if you want to connect everything to wireless AC. It really depends on the layout of your house though. Sometimes if you have a perfectly central router location, you can get away with 1 wifi point.

If you have coax cable running into another room on the other end of the house, you may want to conside MOCA adapters and a 2nd access point. But this may not work properly if you have the X1 tv service which also uses MOCA to stream to the little tv boxes in other rooms of the house.
