Hi, I live in Australia and purchased a Netgear XR1000 nighthawk Wifi 6 pro gaming router and a problem has come up.
Basically I need a modem but unable to get one here, only a modem and router combo. I looked up online and was told I can use a modem router combo without using it as a router.
Would someone be able to give me a guide and a recommended a modem/router to purchase?

I can't return the router if anybody is wondering.

It is strange that you can not find just a modem. Problem is what is the device you are calling a "modem". Most people mean a coax cable modem that runs some version of docsis.

So if you are in the unfortunate situation of only being able to get your internet over phone lines this is using a technology called DSL. This type of technology is so slow that nobody uses it if there is any other option. This also means that it is very hard to get equipment. Although they do make DSL modems they were not very common even when dsl was popular.

Next type that are not actually modems are FIBER ONT boxes. Almost all use some form of GPON but there are many options and the ISP may have policy that requires you use the ISP device.

The last are your fairly standard cable modem that have many model available but even though things might technically work the ISP does not allow it. Think Huawai stuff that is not allowed in the USA. Even if the government wasn't involved the ISP is responsible for software support on cable modem even if you own them. To avoid having to support too many they have limited options.

In any case the first step is to go to your ISP web and find a list of devices they support. It all depends on if they allow you to own your own modem. Most will tell you what is compatible. If there are no modem only devices most modem/routers can be placed into bridge modem which makes them into a modem. The details on this vary a lot depending on what device you are talking about.

If all else fails you can use use both routers if you want. The only real issue is the double NAT and that only really matters if you are running some kind of server. There are ways to work around even this problem. You can in almost all cases turn off the wifi on the first router and only use wifi on the second. It depends on the modem/router but many have the same wifi chips as some of the better routers.
