I kind of missed this post, but wanted to chime in.
Quite a few games that I remember fondly.
Eternal Dagger,
Alternate Reality the Dungeon
Shard of Spring,
Telengard,
Ultima 2,3 and 4.
Bard's Tale 1 and 2.
Dungeon Master,
Not sure which Wizardry it was, but Crusaders of the Dark Savant. Five
maybe?
I think the first rpg I played was Apshai and Curse of Ra via cassette
on the c64.
Games I put the most time in (sans mmorpg of course) would probably be
Ultima 3 and 4.
Game with the best atmosphere is still the cd version of System Shock,
even if it isn't really an rpg in the traditional sense.
Those of you who never tried Ultima4, Origin released a vga version to
freeware and it runs pretty good on XP still, I think you can get it
at underdogs, or one of the abandonware sites.
Where oh where is the sequel to Dunzin?
