Question RTX 3080 No Signal/Black Screen

Hi all, I’ve purchased a Gigabyte RTX 3080 Vision OC second hand & I’m having some trouble with it..

It’s installed, I hit the switch, the gigabyte logo lights up, the fans spin but still it shows ‘No signal’

2070Super (Still got, works fine) >> 3080
MSI Z490 TOMAHAWK
10700KF
16GB RAM
600W PSU…

Now, I know my PSU is definitely weak for the system (Although, Google results show 3080’s actually gaming on 600W systems somehow) I’d still be upgrading regardless, I just want to make sure the GPU is working…

I figured I’d still get at least a post or even into windows, it’d just run out of power if I tried to game correct?

So far I’ve tried;
Safe mode DDU removed drivers,
Reseating multiple times,
Both power connectors are fully ‘clipped’ in,
Clearing CMOS,
Updating to the latest BIOS,
Blowing out my PCIE slot,
Forcing different PCIE Gen modes,
Resetting BIOS to default settings,
Taken my 5Ghz OC off to allocate more power

Is it possible my PSU genuinely can’t even power it to post at least, or do we think the card is knackered in transit?

Any other help would be appreciated, thanks in advance!

You would hope it would still boot up especially as the 2070 super works.

These situations are where a KF processor are a downside as otherwise we could boot into windows using the IGP to see if the card shows up in windows correctly.

Do you have a friend or another computer that you can test the GPU with?

That's what I'm thinking. The 2070s + OC's + all my other component

Good call…I just ‘modified’ my old pc case to allow the 3080 to fit, and wallah! It’s turned on with a 500W PSU!
What in my pc is stopping it from working?!
Do you have discord? May be easier to call if you are ok with? Thank you!

More progress - I've got the 3080 to boot into windows using the bottom PCIE slot, it just won't work in the top. My 2070S works fine in the top slot, strange...

Good news that you got into windows. Rules out a few things.

From looking at your motherboard manual it seems the top pci-e comes from the cpu and the second from the chipset.

The top one supports pci-e gen 3 and gen 4 depending on what processor you have. In your case it will only be gen 3 due to a 10th series cpu.

The 2070 super is a pci-e 3 x 16 card and the 3080 is a pci-e 4 x 16 card. Something seems to be happening with the new card and motherboard having a configuration issue with that top slot.

Pci-e is obviously backwards compatible which is explained by the card working on the exclusively gen 3 second slot. It feels like the motherboard wants to default to pci-e gen 4 when the card is inserted even though the cpu is unable to provide it.

You mentioned that you have already switched the pci-e version in the bios but this is maybe worth exploring further. I am not too familiar with MSI Bios but I think this could be the root cause.

I will look in the manual and see if anything jumps out.

Out of interest how many m2 drives do you have installed?

I would be looking into getting a new PSU though ASAP as even if we get the card working I would not risk using it under load with your current one.
Much agreed. Instead of the Seasonic G12 850W I've decided to purchased the Corsair RM850X which should do me for a long time!

That sounds exactly like what is happening. It's clear now all parts work thankfully!

The motherboard is a MAG Z490 Tomahawk, and I have x1 m.2 installed

Well, after a lengthy discord call with @MEMOFLEX we still haven't found a solution , so if anybody else has any ideas feel free to drop them below :)

Issue;
●3080 doesn't work in my 1st PCIe slot
●3080 works in my 2nd PCIe slot
●2070S works in my 1st and 2nd PCIe slot
●3080 works in another system (Gen3)
●'No Signal' from the 3080 in the 1st PCIe slot

Therefore the 3080 isn't at fault, it's looking towards the motherboard - Somewhere it's having a hard time running a Gen4 card in a Gen3 slot.

Solutions tried;
Updating to latest BIOS
●Setting PCIe [PEG0] to Gen3 from Auto
●Defaulting BIOS
●Unplugged all USB/SATA drives
●x1 RAM stick in the recommended first slot
●DDU old 2070S drivers
●All of the obvious [Cleaning PCIe slot, making sure it's seated correctly, power cables fully connected)

The 3080 doesn't even get warm to an idle temp whilst the system attempts to boot, it's stone cold-. Fans & Gigabyte logo do light up.

This is tried with the RM850x PSU installed ^
