I recently ordered the RTX 5070. Now I'm wondering if my cpu will cause a bottleneck..

My cpu thermal throttles a lot. will this effect the fps?

I play in 4k and currently get about 23-25 fps in horizon Forbidden west with the rtx 3060.

Aiming for 50 - 60 fps in forbidden west with the rtx 5070

Thanks for your advice.

Rtx 5070 performs around Rtx 3090 / 4070 Super.

So for Forbidden West, you'll see roughly what you want compared to this video utilising 5950x which your cpu is faster so the 5070 should perform better.

Will the thermal throttling effect the fps a lot? Just trying to figure out what to expect.

Did I make a poor decision going with the rtx 5070? It was as much as I could afford. 🙁 That review gave it a bad score.

which cooler and motherboard are you using with your cpu ?
and which model of case do you have ?

generally speaking rtx 5070 is a fairly big upgrade over rtx 3060
rtx 3060 is on par with 2 generations old class 70 nvidia card (2070) and slower than 2070 super ,
so you are basically getting a 2 generations uplift .

however the truth is the rtx 5070 is not the best product overall :
it still only has 12gb of VRAM and
it barely beats its direct predecessor while being slower than 4070Ti super
and it costs way too much at the moment ...

Because Intel X00K/S CPUs are designed to push clocks to the max while remaining below 100C and since they can use 200-320w stock on Z motherboards getting to a thermal throttle is easy.
IIRC 12900k can be pressed by a dual-tower cooler without overheating, maybe he needs to buy a better cooler

With exception of a few coolers, nearly all of them will have a X00K/S CPU go to 90C or above when pushed. If he is thermal throttling while playing lightly threaded games then he likely needs to repaste his CPU and test, if it still thermal throttles then he likely needs a better cooler. I would recommend this for an air cooler assuming it could fit his case.

In isolation and depending on what you paid for the 5070 it is not a bad card. A lot of the negative reviews come from it not being much of an uplift from the 40 series cards - especially the 4070 super which is very close in performance. In addition the 12gb of vram is also a criticism levelled at the card as this may affect the longevity of the card in certain use cases.

At 4k it is likely in some titles that future sacrifices will need to be made to texture quality settings in comparison to a card that has 16gb of Vram. At present titles such as the new Indiana Jones games are particularly VRAM hungry for example. Ray Tracing also requires additional vram compared to traditional raster.

A lot will depend on the games you play but it just may need some sacrifices in the future. I have a 4070 super so I am in the same boat although I run at 1440p so the vram requirements are less due to the lower resolution.

Regarding the cpu then can you confirm what cooler you are using? The 12900k was difficult to keep cool anyway so the KS model turns this up another notch. In gaming at 4k however I wouldn't expect it to thermal throttle massively with a 5070 as you should be in a GPU bind rather than a CPU one unless the cooler is somehow inadequate for the chip.

Confirm the cooler and that may help answer the question and find a resolution as it is still a more than capable cpu.
