run BIOS when trying to install windows on new hard drive?

I am trying to setup windows XP on a newly installed hard drive. I keep getting the BSOD. How do I get into BIOS and change to IDE as has been suggested?

Typically, when you power the system on, you press a function key or the DEL key to enter the BIOS. The specific key used depends on the motherboard/system in use. This is all done before Windows begins to boot.

Are you referring to changing the SATA mode from AHCI or RAID to IDE?
