Run i7 without CPU HSF

Q1. Is it possible to run i7 without the HSF if there are 2x23cm intake fan(2x110 CFM) and 1x23cm(110 CFM)&1x14cm(60 CFM) exhaust fan on my case?

Q2. How do I determine the full load voltage? with Stress Prime 2004?

1. Without HSF, even with so many fans, would kill the CPU soon...as the HSF is in direct contact with the CPU and hence dissipates the heat soon before it causes any damage to the CPU...
You can try undervolting the CPU to reduce the heat...but still you would need a HSF...

2. Prime 95 would be very suitable for CPU stress test...

1. How about one 23cm(110CFM) SIDE intake fan on my case which blows air directly onto the CPU and GFX?
(p.s. My friend has his Pentium 4 cooled by a 20cm side intake fan and the temperature stays at about 35C idle. Beside, as far as I know, the operation temp of P4 and i7 are very similar if I'm not mistaken.

2. What's the difference between Stress Prime 2004 and prime 95? Isn't 2004 newer version?

1. The i7s have a 130W TDP, which is pretty high and hence even with a HSF, their temps hit 100 degrees or more under load...So I would say you are taking a chance...

2. Prime 2004 is actually based on the Prime95...It has slightly better GUI...

And I think another problem that you would face - CPU stability under load as high temps could cause BSOD and it might even shutdown without warning...

But as heat increases, intel's cutoff mechanism would come in and may underclock the CPU to reduce the heat...

If anyone has an i7 that hits 100c under load, please re-seat your Heatsink WITH some thermal paste. And be sure the fan is spinning.

It might be possible if it was heavily undervolted and underclocked, but even then I think you'd need at least a tall HS. Your friend's P4 is what you could call a real air (only) cooled cpu, though I do think your friend underclocked and undervolted that one. Besides why take the risk on an I7, your friend's P4 has already lost most of its value now, and it dying could have little consequence.

I hit 81C just encoding video. You must be talking about the non-existent E0 stepping that nobody has.

No. Seriously why do you want to run with no heat sink? I fail to see any logic behind it.

WHY would you want to use the I7 without a heatsink. Space does not seem to be the problem as you have 23CM fans. Noise does not seem to be the problem as it could be overcome with an aftermarket cooler like noctua.

Because the noise of stock HSF upsets me a lot and a good and QUIET aftermarket HSF is very expensive which I am not willing to pay for. ^^;

with no fan plugged in the mobo and only the heat sink seated, maybe, under volt and under clocker. (done it before on an A64 with a SI-120, which is the TRUE of it's day, then I grabbed a delta 100 CFM fan)

Besides the stock fan isn't really up to keeping i7 cool, damn near all air coolers fail at that, it runs HOT!

I keep hearing folks claim how hot i7's are. but with an Antec 900 case w/120mm fan on side and a cooler master hyper520 neo air cooler and I cant get past 61c @4.0ghz under full load.

Me thinks I need to get a new heatsink for my i7, my nero's currently getting 67C at Prime95 load, and it's at stock speeds

I really like the looks and performance of my hyper 520 neo. Only downside is that the heatsink screws in from the back. so have to remove whole mobo to remove it.

OK. I will get a cheaper case with a good aftermarket HSF.

Bigger fans are usually very quiet; they run at merely 19dB for HAF932, so the noise from the CPU HSF can be heard clearly especially when I am sleeping.
As to the speed control, I set it to run at full speed all the time in order to make my CPU as cool as possible. IMO, the performance of CPU is more important than the noise level of HSF.

I know you got an old comp, under clock and under volt and get some passive heat sinks with large case fans for cheap and use that as a NAS/BT/Game Server/Vent Server for 24/7 use IN ANOTHER ROOM.
