I am looking on buying two R9 280x GPU's and 2 additional monitors to run an eyefinity set up but I am afraid that I will have serious problems with an active adapter as all over the place people are saying they die easy. Is this really a problem? Anyways would it be possible to run two monitors off one card via DVI and using the 2nd card to power my 3rd monitor via DVI. I want to be able to run 5760x1080

As soon as you enable Xfire in CCC all the ports on your additional cards are disabled and only the ports on your first card function. Assuming you already have one monitor connected you can plug a second monitor into any port on your main card (doesn't matter which interface) and then use CCC to enabled Extended Desktop.

Can I only run off primary card?
I am planning on gaming with these in CF . But the monitors(Acer H226hql) do not use a display port. I know I could run an active adapter from the primary cards DisplayPort to DVI and plug that into the monitor, but instead can I just occupy an extra DVI from the second card while using the two primary DVI connections available.
