Hi people,

I have heard that there will be image distortion or letterboxing when using a 3840x2160 display at 1440p. Is this true?

From what I can gather the letterboxing/image distortion is because 3840x2160 isn't true 4K (true 4K being 4096x2160) so when it tries to scale to 2560x1440p it doesn't fit properly. Only when it's true 4K resolution is when is scales properly as 4086x2160 is exactly double the size in both width and height to that of 1080p. That's what I hear anyway.

Can anyone debunk this please?

(FYI I'll be PC gaming at either 1440p or 4K on a TV rather than a monitor as a monitor is not an option for me)

Many thanks to the both of you. I hadn't even realised it was aspect ratio dependent, although it makes sense. I'm aware that 4K monitors usually don't come above 60Hz but I've been looking ata 55inch 4K 120Hz TV's rather than monitors as a monitor is not possible with my setup.

hey man I don't know if you already made your purchase or not, but I just saw this so I thought id give you some info. Im just coming off of using a 40 inch 4k lg tv as my monitor and even if the tv is 120Hz you still wont get anything higher than 60 Hz when you have the resolution set to 4k. its because HDMI 2.0 and even display port 1.2 cant do any higher than 60 Hz at 4k. hope that helps.
