Running 64GB at 2133/2400 on a X79 motherboard

Hello Community,

I plan to build a low cost CFD (Computation Fluid Dynamics) workstation. For CFD calculations the memory bandwidth is extremely important. The simulation speed is scaling almost linear with the memory clock (rule of thumb, since latency is important as well) and amount of memory channels. I really need 64GB of memory due to the large case size I am going to run.

For my planned setup with an I7 4820k I need the fastest memory I can run stably. I had contact with the MSI support and they said that with their X79a-GD45 Plus I can only manage 64GB at 1600 MHz. However there might be a small chance that 1866 is working as well.

I read on this forum that the ASUS Rampage IV is better for overclocking and gives less trouble with fast memory.

What about the I7-4930K? Does it have a better memory controller and is therefore better for faster memory?

So anybody with an idea for a good build? Or has experience with X79 motherboard and 2400 memory?

Thanks for help!

I wouldn't do it on that board with overclocking. You are just asking for corruption 🙁

If you want something good that will be for CFD you need to get an ECC memory board that error corrects when it detects a fault. Otherwise when you run this thing for days it will cause corruption more than likely. Especially so when you overclock 🙁

Play it smart and don't regret it later.

Hey thanks for your answer! There is actually a lot of discussion going on in the CFD community if ECC is really necessary. CFD online. So apparently ECC is not required as long as some of the simulations are allowed to crash from time to time. Which is totally fine for me. ( I have to mention that there are also a lot of people that truly believe in ECC )

However you might be right since I want to overclock... But with ECC Ram I lose a hell lot of performance!

Tradesman1 thanks a lot for your help, really appreciate it! I also considered a setup of two nodes with each a 4820K, 32GB @2133 (or if possible 2400) and a low cost mainboard a la X79a-GD45 Plus. Would a X79a-GD45 Plus/ASRock X79 Extreme4 etc. run 4 Rams at 2133/2400 stably?

I kept on believing the same thing, that ECC gives a big hit to performance but it's wrong aparently. http://www.techspot.com/article/845-ddr3-ram-vs-ecc-memory/
