I asked the same question a few weeks ago when I was upgrading from an Ati 2400 pro to HIS 5670. I have a 300 PSU and I asked whether it could handle the ATI 5670. I got mixed answers, some said yes and others advised for a PSU upgrade. The HIS 5670 consumes 64 Watt max under load and so I kind of knew my 300 watt will be fine. Indeed, everything turned out fine!!!

Now the new problem:

I want to now upgrade to the ATI 5750 (by MSI). Actually, I have already ordered this GPU from newegg.ca. The 5750 consumes 86 watt max. So, it only consumes about 22 more watts than my ATI 5670.

So, will my 300 watt PSU be able to run the ATI 5750 (86 watt max) fine? (considering it ran the ATI 5670 more than fine (64 watt max))

FYI: I will buy the PCI Express power adapter that converts two 4-pin Molex power supply connectors into a single 6-pin PCI Express connector to power the ATI 5750.

These are my specs:

Dell Inspiron 530
Intel Core 2 duo e4600 @ 2.4GHz
3 GB ram @ 800Mhz
300 watt PSU

If you do suggest me a new PSU, please suggest me one considering the size of my case. It is a Dell Inspiron 530 and it doesn't look that big. I dont know what kind of PSU to look for, for compatibility reasons.

I am not sure about HP and their power supplies.

My dell has a 300 watt psu which also delivers 19A. I am running it fine so far. Again, I can't say anything about HP's power supply even if it delivers the same wattage and amps as mine.

My best suggestion would be to go buy it and try it out. If it doesn't work then simply upgrade the power supply (?).

One more thing, consider buying a Nvidia gtx 460 768mb for around $200 (or the 1 gig version for like $240) and upgrade your power supply to support the gtx 460, you would have graphics power exceeding Ati 5850!
