I want to upgrade to a 4k monitor but don't know if my system will be able to handle it right now.I have a RX 480 8GB card right now and will be upgrading to the gtx 1080 within 2-3 months hopefully, would it be fine to buy the monitor now?
Specs:
i5-6600 (non k) @3.6GHz
RX 480 8 gb asus rog
8gb DDR4 RAM
500W PSU (Upgrading to 650w once i get closer to the 1080)

Games i normaly play:
ArmA 3
PLAYERUNKNOWNS BATTLEGROUNDS
GTA V
Paragon
Just Cause 3
And some VR games (Vive)

Thanks a ton in advance for any help!

If you plan to upgrade to the GTX1080 why not wait till you get the 1080 before getting the new monitor? Monitor prices always keep going down for higher res and new products keep providing better options.

To answer your question, yes, the rx480 can handle 4k, but not with playable FPS without significant compromises with the graphical detail you want to see. GTA V and Just Cause will definitely stress the rx480 at 4k.
