RX 480 for 1440p?

Based on current benchmarks, and the supposed 390-390x kind of performance, do you guys think that the RX 480, when overclocked well, will be able to do med-high no AA 1440p 60 fps? I have an overclocked 270x right now and it's starting to dog because of vram frequency issues but it still does high-ultra 50-60 fps ok. I am expecting this out of a 480 at 1440p. Is this a reasonable expectation?

I'm probably going be getting an RX 480 when the non-reference models come out in the next couple weeks. I bought a R9 390 a couple weeks ago and have another 2 weeks to return it, so i'm crossing my fingers that the cards come out soon. As the cards benchmark pretty similarly, I'm assuming my settings will be nearly the same. I could still run Overwatch on extreme settings and get 40+ FPS. I have a freesync monitor that does 1440p @ 144hz, so I lowered the settings to high, and a couple other settings down to medium (model details & shadows) and can constantly get 120+ FPS. Hope that helps

Sounds about right.
My 390x can do most games at 1080/100 at max or close to.
I don't know much about the upcoming 4xx cards, but if they are anything like the previous few generations don't expect much OC headroom.

Last I heard the RX-480 is similar to a GTX980's DX11 performance.

So that's roughly 2X the performance of an R9-270X though the RX-480 has some tweaks that will do better in DX12 optimized games compared to previous AMD cards so 2.5X in some games in the future is likely if you have a good CPU.

*You can flip through the games at the above review and look at the FPS they get for the GTX980 as a rough guide, though some would be best run at 1920x1080.

Well, with an entirely new gpu this time around at a much more efficient node size, we might see decent overclocks, which may inch some well cooled and well binned 480s closer to the 980 ti range or so.

I wouldn't bet on seeing a 480 approach a 980 ti. There's a big gap between a 980 and a 980ti, performance-wise. Regarding gaming at 1440p on a 480, it should be more than enough for most games, since a 390 can already do 1440p pretty well for most games. And by pretty well, I mean if you aren't using AA for some reason, it can max just about anything on the market at 1440p@60Hz, let alone med-high.

There have been multiple firestrike and 3DMark scores indicating about a 20-25% difference between a 480 and a 980 ti, with both being at stock clocks most of the time. If you were to somehow get a 480 to 1400mhz, I think that gap would shrink to about 15% or so. I don't think it will match a 980 ti at all, don't get me wrong, but I think this could be used as a point made towards gamers who play console and are considering the switch, because the 980 ti has this big aura of "awesome" surrounding it, that is known among even many console gamers. So to offer something that even comes within 20% of it in some cases for a fraction of the cost would most likely create a large demand for it. Just a thought.

I use my 8gb 480 on an asus 1440p 144hz tn panel. In games like Dota 2 and Overwatch I am sitting pretty at 70-100 fps no problem with everything on ultra/max except MSAA for Overwatch.

It works fine for those games but if you want Witcher 3 at 1440p ultra at 100 fps its not going to be even close. But if you remove all MSAA /AA you will get a big jump in frames on med/high settings. So it will all run and run pretty good if you remove the multi sampling which kills performance. I find at high hz and freesync its not needed as much. Or it could be I lack a nuanced eye.
