Long story short I have a budget of £400 and need a new gpu and a pcie riser that both fit in that price range. My choices are 5700xt and a 2070

Now as we all know the 5700xt outperforms the 2070. But has driver issues. Now do I risk it for the biscuit and go for the 5700xt or stick safe but take a hit on performance and go for the 2070.

The latest driver was supposed to fix most issues for the 5700xt but I have a friend who brought a thicc iii only for it to have crazy issues.

I'm completely lost at this point. Mixed information of people telling me it's a bad idea and people telling me the chances of getting a bad card are low. What do I do?!?!?

I would love to hear peoples opinions on this and which card I would be best to go for. After seeing the issues my friend has, I'm leaning towards a 2070

Thanks

Solution
I have the Sapphire 5700XT, just 2 weeks on and it's doing my head in.

fresh install, many ddu and drivers tries, done over 10+ troubleshooting methods and still fails. Reading on forums everywhere STAY AWAY from this card. try system with old NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950 and everything works fine for 24/7. 5700xt lasats from 20 mins to 2 hours max before restarts/game freezes, black screen.

Need to look for a Nvidia alternative now for 5700XT as I can still return card.!! Frustrated.com !!

270S seems a btter option, time to migrate I think
Yeah, Navi is a tough recommendation with some people still experiencing driver issues... it's such a good value too. And some people are expecting Big Navi to challenge the 2080 Super/2080Ti...

What case are you doing V-gpu in?

If it were me, I'd take a chance. If I end up drawing the short straw, back it goes and a 2060 Super I'd get.
~BUT, since I'm influencing someone else's decision, I'd prefer to save you a possible headache and point you to the 2060 Super instead.

I know you said 2070, but the 2060 Super is very close in performance for a good deal less.

The case I'm using is a corsair carbide 275r

What would the chances be of me getting a 5700xt only to get a bad one

I might add I live a 5 minute drive from a gaming PC store. So taking a card back is ezpz

Should this influence my choice. Maybe go in person and buy a 5700xt, if it has issues take it back and get a 2070 ?
Depending on the stores refund or exchange policy, it is definitely not a bad idea to go for the 5700xt and then return it and get a 2070 or 2060 Super if it has issues.

It is something I would try out.

Well alright. Hopefully your riser kit uses the case's horizontal PCIE slots and not the vertical ones.
Reason being, the vertical slots simply position a gpu too close to the glass side panel, choking the majority of gpus, save for blower and custom water block gpus.

yeah i am aware, ive done my research and its a temp sacrifice im willing to take. my case positions the card a good bit away from the glass, 2-2.5 inches, it should be enough to cool a 2070, not exactly a hot running card lol

i think i might just go for the 2070. i dont know if 5 fps is really worth all the hassle of trying to fix it then returning it. sucks im paying more for less performance. but nothing i can really do about it

5700XT = 2070 Super
5700 = 2060 Super
Comparable performance to those gpus - if one doesn't draw the short straw...

Nvidia has more stable drivers, but AMD's age better over time, it appears. Hardware Unboxed did some benchmarks covering Vega 56 VS GTX 1070 and the RX 580 VS GTX 1060.
Ah well, guess you can't have 'em all...

Next question, which 2070 super?

Yeah I went with a 2070 in the end. It's in and it's working fine. Been using it for about 2 weeks now and it was worth every penny. Yeah the 2070s was out of budget. The 2070 I got was 370 pounds. A 2070s will set me back about 500 pounds. Which is about 650 dollars I think.

I did really consider your recommendation for the 2060s btw. But I was already taking a hit on performance going from the 5700xt to the 2070. I really didn't want to then take ANOTHER hit on fps. I'd rather had paid the extra like
