[SOLVED] RX 590 artifacting

So, I have this system.

Ryzen 1700x
16gb ddr4 3000 ram-crucial ballistix
250gb samsung 960 evo nvme
2 1tb hard drives
XFX RX 590 Fatboy
Powerspec 750 watt power supply from microcenter-62.5 amp on 12 volt rail

The issue I'm having is that if I start to play a game, seems to be any game, can be World of Warships, or can be Far Cry 5 for example. My card is solid for about an hour to 2 hours of play. Then after a while, I begin getting what I can best describe as artifacts. The card stays stable and will still game fine, but if you are looking and moving quickly, you get a colored ghosting type effect.

I am on a 144hz 1080p 27 inch monitor if that makes a difference.

Max temp I have been seeing on the card is high 70's to low 80's. When it happened a day or two ago, I think max temp was 78. In fact, at one point when it was actually occurring, the card was at like 52. I did get the card from microcenter, and got the 2 year replacement plan, so I'm good there. I've literally had the card maybe 2-3 weeks. Maybe I need to install MSI afterburner and run a custom fan profile? Or should I just return the card? I've been seeing some deals on 1070's for not much more than I paid for this card. But I know the RTX 2060 is supposed to be out tomorrow, so been kind of holding out to see what that looks like.

I will say, I feel like when the RX 590 works, that the colors are actually more vibrant I think than the Nvidia cards I've owned. It's not a bad card really, but doesn't seem like you should need to set custom fan profiles on a brand new card if that's the fix.

Also, when I plugged the card into power, I did make sure to use 2 seperate power leads going to the card, and not just plug 2 connectors from the same wire in as I know that card can draw some juice.

Solution
When you installed the XFX RX 590 Fatboy did you reinstall the AMD Drivers? When installing a new GPU I recommend using DDU to clean the old drivers. Then go to the Manufacturers website to download the newest driver.
If I were in your shoes, I would just return the graphics card

So the funny part about this, at Christmas, I originally purchased a GTX 1070 FE from there as a refurbished card. The card ran great! However, the fans were at 5200 rpms no matter what. However, when I returned it, they had no more 1070's. So the RX 590 was a compromise card since it was the best performing they had at a similar price point.

However, I did use DDU to clean out the old drivers. Drivers could be an issue, but seeing how it performs like a champ for an hour or 2 before having trouble, my suspicion is that maybe since the fans don't kick in enough and that some vram or something on the card on the card is getting too hot and not getting cool enough.

I think I'm going to hold out until at least tomorrow and see what the RTX 2060 launches for and if Microcenter has any in my area. If they do at the 349.00 dollar mark, I think I'll return it for one of those. If they don't have any in the next couple of days, I already reserved a 1070 for around 320 dollars. So depending on the situation of the 2060, I'll return and either get a 2060 or 1070 depending on availability and pricing I think.

I don't have a picture of it, but it's basically you have images on the screen, and when you move, you get a colored trail where the object was. But it never happened with the 1070.

If freesync is used, you get flickering like the card and monitor are having trouble deciding the proper brightness sometimes. Not everywhere, but I noticed it for example in the menu of world of warships, and a little in far cry 5.

But as far as the artifact, that doesn't happen until the card has heated up for an hour or so.

Sounds like a monitor issue to me. This issue is happening on this monitor because you are fully using it's features . It was made for an AMD card. I would return it since ViewSonic isn't the best brand anyways. Opt for an Asus or MSI.

Hm. I'll think on it. I paid 219 at the time. They do have an MSI optix for a little more. Or on the other hand they have a Dell 27 inch freesync with no curve, but otherwise almost same specs for 199.

Here is the Dell.

And here is the MSI.

They also had this Acer which is 1440p, but would the 590 struggle with it?

Kind of thinking for future a bit to. I know I had fraps on the other day with far cry 5 and the 590 was actually pushing 90-100 fps on high detail settings. Going to investigate something else also, I saw somewhere that the RX 590 Fatboy has a vbios switch. Going to look and see if that is the case. Apparently one bios is for quiet mode, the other is for performance mode, which is to run the fans etc higher. If so, I'm going to try to turn it to the other mode.

From some reviews I read, the card was supposed to ship with the switch in performance mode, but one site said all the review samples they had seen were set to the quiet mode. They also noted that the vram got over 90 degrees.

So I wonder if that is the case, if my card is in this quiet mode, if placing the card to performance mode will stop the artifacts if the vram is getting too warm. This scenario makes sense to me seeing how issues don't really occur until after an hour or more, which would be more than sufficient time for the card to get to full operating temps.

I did look at maybe getting a 2060, but microcenter where I would return my 590 to only has one for 379 dollars, so about 100 more than I paid for the 590. If I try turning fans up and the monitor acts ok, I may keep it and go with a 1070 instead.

Ok. So a few days have passed. Bit of an update. Still have the same monitor and card, haven't been able to get back to microcenter yet. I did start tinkering and reset all the settings in the AMD control panel to defaults, and installed the latest driver released January 10. So on high settings (not max) I'm getting around 90-100 fps.

I also enabled freesync again and that seems to work well now. The only thing I really experienced now is the monitor has gone to a black screen a couple of times during gameplay, but then comes back in a few seconds. I need to test and see if flickering is still present in other titles like world of warships.

However, I had been thinking of returning the 590 since I paid 280 and better cards are out for not much more. I now have a conundrum I've put myself in.

Microcenter where I shop came up today with a Vega 56 powercolor red dragon for 349.99. What I like about this is I could utilize freesync.

However, they also have an MSI ventus rtx 2060 for 359.99. Amazon has the same card for 10 dollars less and they will usually price match Amazon or Newegg. So I should be able to get it for the same price as the Vega.

I see the 2060 trades blows with the Vega, but might edge it out just a little. I do know Nvidia supports freesync/adaptive sync. The only issue with that is my monitor only has 2 HDMI ports and a VGA port. From what I've read, Nvidia only supports freesync on displayport. Not sure how much of an issue that issue is because I could use fast sync.

I guess my question is this. If I return the RX 590, then the question is Vega 56 or RTX 2060?

Thoughts or opinions?

This is a very hard response. Usually I would say to buy the Vega 56 since you have freesync. But seeming like your monitor already has issues and you haven't experience them with the GTX 1070, I'd say get the RTX 2060. There are soooo many cons and pros to either. The 6GB on the RTX 2060 seems like it can become an issue in the future, even the 980 TI had 6GB. I'd personally return the RX 590 and get the the GTX 2060 with a different monitor. It's looking like the monitor is a issue here , not being able to support it's features.

$349 for the RTX 2060 and Battlefield is an outstanding deal.

Solution
Ok. I was between the 2060 and Vega. I will say this, I think in hindsight I may have caused some of my own issues. I'm not 100% sure on that, but I mentioned resetting all of the settings. I had followed a guide online where the guy recommended different texture settings etc than stock. It seems like a lot of the issues with freesync improved after resetting those settings. Plus I found the monitor has a "game mode" that I activated.

So I think I may go ahead and return the RX 590 and keep the monitor for the time being. The good thing is that I did purchase a 2 year replacement on the monitor. So pretty much anytime in the next 2 years, I can take the monitor back and swap it out for store credit.

I don't know if you've ever shopped microcenter, but you can use those 2 year replacement warranties (you pay a little extra depending on the item and it's value), and myself I pay the extra for them on graphics cards and I did for the monitor also. So if I get a 2060, then it could have issues at month 23 for example, I can take it back and tell them I'm having trouble, and they usually give you a gift card for the original purchase price. A friend of mine they did this for a 290x a few years back. I've rebuilt systems using that when I had trouble. But it's nice because you don't have to deal with any RMA, etc. It's all in house and you don't even talk to the manufacturer basically.

Anyway, long spiel there. But I may hold out on the monitor and see if it keeps acting ok. If it does great. If not, I can always return the monitor and go 1440p.

As far as graphics card, if I'm going 2060, i was specially looking at this one, as it's what they have in stock. But I should be able to get it for 349.99 instead of 359.99 because Amazon had it for that, and they will normally price match Newegg or Amazon.

I'll have to ask about battlefield 5. They usually have those game deals. If not, then that game isn't a deal breaker to me. Still want to finish far cry 5, and have AC Odyssey to pay through, and actually bought Origins as well that I have barely touched. I've run the benchmark but not really played it lol. Then I think I'd like to get the new Ace Combat 7 at some point. So considering I have time between working etc, I have quite a few games to keep me busy for a while lol.

Thanks for all of your time btw. I appreciate it. I'm a tech myself even for a day job, but it's nice to bounce things off someone who's seen some things I may not have dealt specifically with and get good opinions from someone who knows things I don't.
