Ideally, I want to get the closest to 144FPS as possible for e-sport titles.

Will there be an issue if I get a 1080p? Seeing as how the GPU will pump out a ton more frames that my CPU can process?

I have my eye on two monitors right now, both are 144Hz G-Sync and both are about $500, except one is 1080p and one is 1440p. The 1440p is tempting but I really want those high framerates.

Sorry if I'm in the wrong category, but this question is basically asking which one my CPU will handle better. I already have a R5 1600, so I'm not looking to change CPU right now. I'm upgrading my GPU and monitor.

Solution
The GTX 1070 can be used ideally for 1080p and 1440p resolutions.
However the GTX 1080 and higher are designed for 1440p or higher resolutions.
To answer your question, it would be wise to go with a 1440p monitor when pairing a Ryzen 1600 with a GTX 1080TI.
In general, the higher the resolution, the more the videocard can help since the workload for higher res is put on the videocard.

So, in most cases, your 1080 won't be doing much at 1080p no matter how high a refresh rate your monitor has. In short, a jump to 1440p should be a 'free' benefit to having such a powerful card. As long as your CPU can keep up, it won't matter if it's 1080p or 1440p.

Since you're playing esports games, your CPU should have no trouble keeping up.
