So I just got myself a new Ryzen 3 1200 + Asus Prime X370 Pro (Got this board because I will upgrade to R7 2700 or 3700 in the future)
And I appear to have gotten a good silicon? I'm not so sure because the stock cooler limits me and I get around 85+ C temps after a while in P95 at 4GHz with only 1.2V.
I haven't tried lowering the voltage even more tho.

I've been wondering if I could get about 4.2GHz if I get a better cooler? I really wonder what the limit would be at 1.425V? Maybe I could get 4.3-4.4? Lol Idk

I'm really excited and eager to get a better cooler but don't really have money left for a decent cooler yet.

What's your opinion?

Ryzen throttles at 75C, so how are you keeping stable at 85 for any length of time?

That being said. I dont think your going to get over 4GHz stable with any cooler. At 1.2 and 4Ghz at 85, your going to get alot hotter at 1.42.

But you can always try.

I had the Scythe Mugen 5 RB on my 1700 but would hit 78C, it did well, but I got better results with a Noctua NH-U12S SE-AM4

Sitting at 3.9 at 1.325 max temps 64C
There is no way of knowing until you try. It could go through the roof at 4.1Ghz. 4 Ghz stable is unusual. 4.1Ghz stable is rare. Anything higher would be exceedingly rare.

If you are hitting 85C. I would get a better cooler. If not to cool it down better. At least to reduce the noise.

Yeah I should get a better cooler so I can see what I can get at 1.4V but about the noise. The stock cooler is seriously low noise. It's barely hearable and I never notice when it ramps up from 1.4k RPM to 2.8k RPM (which is the max RPM)

If you want a good value cooler. The Scythe Mugen 5 Rev B and Thermalright Macho Direct are excellent options. Performance is near that of a Noctua NH-D15 but costs a lot less. The Thermalright is slightly quieter than either. The Scythe Mugen 5 Rev. B cools slightly better than than the Thermalright and nearly identical to the Noctua. They are all very close. Based on overclocked PWM numbers. The most relevant set for most people.

Don't bother with cheaper coolers. Their advantage over the AMD Wraith Spire is too small to justify the cost.

I think those coolers would be overkill and they're not really available where I live.
I have the Wraith Stealth cooler not the Spire (which is bigger and has a vapor chamber) Wraith Stealth is more like a Intel Stock cooler (slightly better).

I'll probably pick up a ThermalTake Contac Silent 12 sometime. It's gonna be more than enough for Ryzen 3 even at 1.4V and 4.2GHz (possibly)

For now I'm happy tho. I don't have much money to throw on an aftermarket cooler right now 😀

It does not throttle before 90° C I think because I never saw anything over it. But I actually tried getting 4.2 but I couldn't get it stable even at 1.4V. But I can easily get a stable 4.1GHz at 1.25V. In day-to-day usage (Dota 2 & GTA V both easily max out my CPU) it never went over 73° C. Tho I have an aggressive fan curve on the Wraith Stealth which is actually pretty quiet even at max fan speed compared to my Asus GTX 760 DF (awful card from Asus, the cooler is a joke) at 70% fan speed lol.
