So i have in my possession a ryzen 5 1600x and a ryzen 7 1700. I am wondering what is better for mainly gaming and some very light sound recording, editing, picture editing, and computer programming? i have a water cooler and plan on OCing with a x470 MOBO and 16gb of ram.

i reckon you could overclock both but if the main taask is gaming then the 1600x will outperform the 1700. the higher clock speed of the 1600x will be better and you will probably get better overclocking performance with the 1600x. the 6 cores wont hold you back in editing and other multi threaded applications.

That would depend on your specific budget. Both Ryzen processors are great and more than capable. Gaming performance is roughly equal, though the Ryzen 7 1700 out performs the Ryzen 5 1600x in every other category. I suggest you go for a Ryzen 5 1600 and save some money, as you are planning to overclock anyway. If budget does not restrain you I would go for the Ryzen 7 1700. It has twice the cores and threads! All Ryzen 7 processors are essentially the same CPU, so you can overclock the 1700 to match the 1700x or possibly 1800x. The Ryzen 7 series is definitely a future-proof and viable option.

i own both of these processors please read the first line of the question again and also the ryzen 7 doesn't have twice the cores but it does have more.

For games the Ryzen 5 1600x is far better at stock speeds. If you get high OCs both are approximately equal.

Ryzen 5 1600x has 6 cores 12 t. and a speed greater than Ryzen 7 1700. Although this has 8 cores 16 t, the number of cores of Ryzen 5 1600x is sufficient.

Since its launch the Ryzen 7 1700 has been known as a bad cpu for games for what it costs.

In the link that I attach "final analysis" you will see the comaparation of these two cpu with others.
