Should I keep my r5 2600 and overclock it to 4ghz or upgrade to a r5 3600. I have a MSI gtx 1660 super so I'm not sure if the performance gain would be worth it.

Solution
If we're talking about gaming performance, then I'm not sure it would be worth upgrading to a 3600 when paired with a 1660 SUPER. Sure, the 3600 can potentially be faster in CPU-limited scenarios, but most newer games are likely to be more graphics limited with that card. Most reviews testing CPU performance in games are pairing the processor with a much faster card capable of pushing double the frame rates, which makes most games CPU-limited at 1080p. And even there, we're not exactly talking about a huge performance uplift worth upgrading the processor for.

Also, at least at US online stores, 3600 pricing is not great right now, typically being higher than the $200 price the processor launched for a year and a half ago. For most...

For most of this year, up until the latter part of this summer, it was possible to get a 3600 for as little as $165-$175, but pricing in recent months hasn't been nearly as good, probably since AMD has been shifting production to their new processors. And on that note, their 5000-series Zen3 processors offer significantly more of a performance uplift in CPU-limited games, well over 20% compared to Ryzen 3000 in many cases. Currently, the least expensive model is the 5600X at $300, but there is rumored to be a non-X version of the processor coming soon that should be priced closer to what the 3600 is currently selling for.

So, it really doesn't seem worth upgrading to a 3600 right now. If anything, I would just overclock your 2600 for the time being if you feel the need for a little more CPU performance, optionally adding a $30-$40 tower cooler to keep temperatures and fan noise reasonable.
