Hi guys,

I've got an aging i7-2600K with 8Gb RAM that I'm looking to upgrade. My boot drive is a Samsung SSD 850 EVO 250Gb, and recently got an EVGA SuperNOVA 550 G3, 80 Plus Gold 550W GPU. So I'm looking to upgrade my CPU, RAM, Mobo, and GPU if I need to. I don't play any games, and am comfortable with light overclocking (ideally with stock cooler, simplicity and stability are most important to me). My main use cases are in x264 and x265 video encoding using Handbrake, and video remuxing using Avidemux or MKVToolNix. Looking to spend max $400-500 CAD. I can see that prices for the i5-8400 are up with stock levels low, so I'm willing to wait a few months if prices will drop. What are your thoughts about my 2 choices, or would you recommend I consider an alternative?

Thanks!

between the 2 i believe the 2600 would be best. both CPU's have 6 cores but AMD put their own version of hyperthreading on it so it will have a total of 12 threads which will be better for multitasking, both have the same clock speed

My friend has recommended the following parts for me on a 2600 rig. What are your thoughts?
- Gigabyte B450M DS3H = $95 CAD
- Zotac GeForce GT 710 1GB = $50 CAD
- Vulcan 16 GB (2 x 8Gb) DDR4-3000 = $130 CAD

You can't compare Intel to AMD clocks speeds. Thats like Apples to oranges . Also can't compare "Thread" count because AMD and Intel threads do not operate the same. Only real way to find out is by checking benchmark results for video encoding using handbreak. It looks like the i5 8400 is a few fps faster for encoding. Not a big deal. Go with whatever is cheaper.

Only program that uses NVIDIA GPU for H.265 encoding is NVENCODE https://developer.nvidia.com/nvidia-video-codec-sdk. Unless you want to write your own program, you'll have to wait until someone does. H.264 on the other hand, is widely available for years now.

This guy makes a cmd tool for every type of card nvidia amd and even intel qsv it's also supposed to integrate into some video editors when using the installer but I never managed to make this work, cmd is more to my liking anyway.

Edit: avidemux uses nvidia hevc encoding for years now.
