Ryzen 5 2600x vs Ryzen 7 1700

Right now I found that the Ryzen 7 1700 is on a sale where it is cheaper than the Ryzen 5 2600x, yet the base clock is slower. Is the Ryzen 7 1700 worth getting at a cheaper price than the Ryzen 2600x? Or is the 2600x better? The difference is about $50 CAD so the 1700 is about 265 CAD while the 2600x is 290 CAD

The only thing is that the ryzen 7 has 8 cores and 16 threads, compared to the 5's 6 cores and 12 threads. Does this make a big difference? Basically the 7 has more cores and threads but slower speeds while the 5 has faster speeds but less cores and threads, plus the 7 is cheaper.

people here would tell you that cores don't matter , speed is more important and that there are few games that use any more than 4 cores. but one should take people's advice with a grain of salt.

Take the middle ground and just get a Ryzen 5 2600.

It really depends on what you will be using the system for. If you are using applications that can take advantage of the 8 cores/16 threads, then the 1700 is a really good option. But if you are not using applications that can take advantage of the extra cores, then the 2600x is a better option as the additional threads of the 1700 will just sit idle.

Both are really good CPUs, so you cant really go wrong.
