Some people have been telling me I need a 3600x or even a Ryzen 7 3700x for 1440p gaming at a 100ish fps on titles like COD, Fortnite, etc. that come out over the next 3 years. Is this true, or is a Ryzen 5 3600 perfectly adequate CPU?

I plan on pairing my CPU with a b450 tomahawk max, g.skill tridentz neo 3600 mhz CL 16 ram, and a Gigabyte Gaming OC RTX 2070 SUPER.

I’m running a 3700X and 2080 Super at 1440p. In COD MW I get about 120-130fps, the cpu only uses 8 threads heavily for the game but even then only about 70% usage in those threads. I see no reason why a 3600 with PBO couldn’t do the same.

As for the next 3 years that’s very difficult to predict. However 12 threads of the 3600 is still impressive compared to Intel offerings.

Ok I shouldn't have too much of a problem there hopefully. Do you know when the Ryzen 4000 series CPUs are supposed to be announced/launched?

You're going to have difficulty with 144 fps because the GPU is too weak to maintain that in the more demanding titles. Also you might want 16 threads later down the line as far as the CPU goes. Tech deals thinks that is what PC gamers should have minimum after the PS5 launches. I disagree though. I think the 3600 will be OK even after the next gen launch. By no means will it be the optimal solution but you should be able to get by with it. If you are OK with 70 to 110 fps your hardware is OK. If not then you'll want to upgrade at some point. In lesser demanding games like fortnite for example you should be A OK for at least 3 years. For games like Cyberpunk 2077 you'll probably get closer to 70 fps or possibly even lower at 1440p. When we talk about 1440p 144hz though we're talking about a very tightly designed system. For example you can't skimp on the CPU and overspend on the GPU. High frame rates at 1440p is very tough. The recommended hardware is RTX 2080 ti and Ryzen 7 3700x/i7 9700K. That's not cheap. The next rung down would be the same CPU's and the RTX 2080 SUPER and I consider this the bare minimum GPU that you should have for 1440p high refresh rate. The CPU though that you already have is the bare minimum that I'd consider for 1440p high refresh rate. Your GPU is very good for now but in a year you'll feel the need to upgrade it if you need more that 60 fps. In 3 years I'd even say it will be more a 1080p card. Those 'next gen' games are going to seriously be demanding. Heck even the latest current gen games are starting to push it.

Your entire system will need upgraded most likely after 3 years if you want 100 fps at 1440p. It's barely enough now. In fact it's going to be a little lacking in the most demanding titles.

1440p 144hz is doable with a 2080 super. You just need a 5.0ghz 8700k/9700k/9900k. Also, a good set of 3600+ MHZ ram sticks with tight timings. None of the ryzen CPUs will have enough clock speed to offer that level of performance.

I don't play titles like Cyberpunk 2077. I play mainly multiplayer shooters like COD and Fortnite, and sometimes more casual games like Rocket League. Would games like that that come out over the next 3-4 years be able to play at 1440p 100ish fps on high settings with my hardware I'm planning to get (R5 3600 and RTX 2070 SUPER)?
