Question Ryzen 7 5800x Spiking in almost every game?

My System is a Ryzen 7 5800x paired with a Gigabyte 4060ti 8Gb. I also have 32 Gigs of Ram and a 1 tb ssd. The CPU is water cooled.

In almost any game I play no matter if it is cpu intensive or Gpu my cpu is spiking causing a horrible frame drop.

I have tried overclocking and many other remedies to combat the bottleneck but nothing seems to help

The 5800x is known to run hot and if you are running a 120mm aio for example that probably isn’t enough.

I don’t think overclocking is going to help you. Basically what happens you load into a game and as that card gets going and feeds data to the cpu, the cpu has to start working harder hence the spikes. Plus modern cpus are pretty good about boosting clock speeds as needed so you aren’t gaining a lot of performance overclocking these days.

But I imagine what’s happening is you’ve got some kind of temperature issue going on where you cpu may be overheating and is likely throttling itself.

Dumb question, when you installed the aio did you remember to remove the plastic from the bottom of the aio before installing it on the cpu? I forgot to do that with an air cooler recently and the temp would jump up when it went under load.

I have a 700w smart power supply, and 360mm mag cooler from Msi. I did remove the plastic but used the thermal compound that came with the cooler. I’ve thought about reapplying as I feel like I may have put too little.

The Mag coolers had an issue with the liquid gunking up in them, just Google it. I'd try an air cooler if you have one spare just to test.

What temp is it spiking up to?
Wraith cooler will likely not be enough.

Reapplying might be the best bet. A 360 shouldn't have a problem. You may want to try the spread method rather than pea sized. Ryzen likes the spread.

The temp actually does not spike too bad, the chip actually stays really cool. The CPU usage in games just likes to to spike to 80-100% while graphics usage stays low. I’m not really sure what’s up. I reapplied and it did not help the problem.

Well that's a good thing, so your not overheating. Just lag spikes.

Ram, what specific ram are you using? What are your timings? Assuming correct slots?

GPU is the correct slot?

SSD close to full?
