Ryzen gaming PC

Hello to all
I've tried my hand building a gaming Pc with AMD for the first time and was happy with my work thanks to help from the forums. Attempting to assemble another one and wanted to get some build advice on what I have so far:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 2700X Processor
GPU: liking the 1080 series but open to suggestions. Looking to spend 3-500$
CPU Case: Rosewill ATX Mid Tower Gaming Computer Case Tempered Glass Panels
Memory: 2x8gb
I'm undecided on the memory and other parts as I am struggling to get the most performance for my money.

If all you are doing is gaming on your PC and little to nothing more than you can opt for the Ryzen R5 2600. The 2600 can usually be bought for about half the cost of the R7 2700X and overclocks to 4.1 - 4.2Ghz rather easily and with those clock speeds can match the gaming performance of the 2700X. The reason to get a R7 2700X over the R5 2600(X) is if you are doing workstation based applications, i.e. heavy multi tasking, rendering, and even streaming game play. If your not doing any of those things then the R5 2600 would give you the same gaming performance and save you nearly $150.

As far as GPUs go the 1080(Ti) are very good and highly recommended, if you can find them. Nvidia has already announced they arent making anymore...

You may find it easier and much more economical to get a 1070Ti which if you overclock can easily match the 1080 in performance.

As far as memory goes its recommended for Ryzen to stick with memory that uses Samsung B die and try to get 3000Mhz or greater. I personally have 3600Mhz B die RAM that I got when they were having a really good sale, but the G.Skill Trident Z RGB memory kits have been on good sales here and there and I've had very good luck with mine. I have had it overclocked stable to 3800Mhz, but the performance difference wasn't worth the extra voltage to me so I have it set to 3600Mhz for everyday use. It seems like Ryzen usually sees the greatest performance impact with RAM speed at 3200Mhz and anything over that starts to have diminishing return.

You are very correct, second gen Ryzen (Ryzen+) has greatly improved RAM compatibility. While it is still recommended to stick with Samsung B die, Ryzen+ will work well with A die as well. I've never had any issues G.Skill or Corsair Vengeance thus far.

Hi again, hey... where does one go to verify which die a memory manufacturer uses in which of its many RAM products? The 'specs' section doesn't seem to go that deep into the weeds.
 


If your tying to find out the information for the RAM already installed in your system the easiest way to see all your RAM details is with the program Thaiphoon. The program is free to download online. As far as buying a RAM kit usually the timings will tell you if its going to be "B" die, which is usually what Ryzen owners are looking for. 3200Mhz RAM "B" die will almost always be CL14, whereas "A" die I believe is CL16.

To be honest I've built rigs with both and while first gen Ryzen really didn't work with anything but "B" die second gen Ryzen (Ryzen+) seems to be just fine running "B" die or "A" die. I've never had issues with running and even overclocking RAM of either type on Ryzen+.
