I'm looking to upgrade my PC and the Ryzen 5 series looks good! The first step I've already taken is to upgrade my GPU to a GTX 1060 6GB. Now i'm looking for a CPU, motherboard, and memory combo to complete the build. I'll be using the same case, PSU, etc.

Here is the build I have now.

Here is the build I'm thinking about upgrading to.

I've also thrown around the idea of going with the R5 1600 instead of the R5 1500X and the MSI B350 Tomahawk instead of the Gigabyte B350 Gaming. Also should I go with this RAM or something from Crucial?

Let me know what you guys think!

Solution
If you want the fastest of the 5 series, get the 1600 or 1600X (see my sig below). OC'ing isn't their strong suit unfortunately. 4.1GHz seems to be the high end. Unless you're pretty good and pretty patient. Even left at stock though, the 1600X I have seems to be a match for my Kaby Lake i5... in most case anyway. Wins some, loses some.

I would recommend looking thru the memory QVL for the motherboard you finally decide on and see if you can find identical RAM. That's what I did to be safe. Ryzen still has some issues with RAM compatibility, although there have been enough AGESA updates to BIOSs by now to have just about eliminated the issue.

The board is kinda a personal choice. I was tossing those same two around, and only...

The board is kinda a personal choice. I was tossing those same two around, and only picked the MSI because of the white color for my build. Both boards are good. You won't go wrong with either, but Gigabyte seems to have a better past reputation. Although I've had no issues with either over the years.

Btw, compared to your old cpu and platform, you will be in a different league.

Perfect thank you. I'll most likely go with the 1600 as it isn't a big price difference from the 1500x. Good advice about the memory for finding identical RAM. I was thinking about the Gigabyte board just because I already have one, but I'll look into MSI as well. Looking forward to building!
