Ryzen7 1800x, 2x16gb or 4x8gb DDR4 3200mhz?

Hey guys, I just bought myself a new system, and i managed to order the wrong memory set.
CPU/MOBO: Ryzen 7 1800x/ASUS ROG x370 Hero VI (WI-FI)
I was supposed to buy 2x16gb Trident Z RGB 3200mhz, but bought 4x8gb Trident Z RGB 3200mhz...
Ive read and heard that Ryzen is not so "happy" with the RAM and a bit picky, so I was wondering if anybody could help.

Could I use 4x8gb and get them running at 3200mhz, or should I refund them and get the 2x16gb 3200mhz?

seemingly running 4 x 4 (8) can cause issues with Ryzen, or at least the mobo. It won't run the DIMMS at full speed. A friend has 4 x 8 and can only run max at 2400. It seems to be a well documented issue. So id suggest 2 x whatever DIMMS your looking at.

Also, unless your doing some heavy multitasking or rendering or such, then 32gbs is way overkill. 16gb is the sweetspot just for gaming, with new games like BF1 starting to use up 8gbs (where 8gbs used to be the sweetspot). At 1080p BF1 uses 6.9gbs on my system, and with hardware reserved memory and backround tasks running, I touch about 9 gbs usage.

Ill have them changed for a 2x16gb kit then.
All the threads with the conclusion of the memory problems that I looked up (with decent info) was from earlier this year.
Needed to know if this was still a problem, since Ryzen is highly beneficial to Memory speed.

I know 32gb is way to much for most things, but since I've come to the conclusion that 16gb can be used up, while playing games with memory issues/leaks, I still went with it. (had problems with early access games)

Well, if your sure about the 32gbs and money isn't an issue, I guess, why not! It won't harm you

The memory issues have been improving. With the Agesa 1.0.0.6 release (so make sure you have the latest bios to increase the chance of the high density DIMMS you're getting to work), there is much more compatibility. But even still, lots are having trouble with setting timings manually or even by XMP. I would strongly recommend looking at the QVL for your mobo, specially as your going with 32gbs. If you can find a compatible kit on the QVL, it's much more likely to work when you plug them in, and that stands for the 2 x 16gb DIMMS too. The problem with the ram compatibility seems to come down to chip manufacturer (ie Samsung, Hynix etc) and also whether the DIMMS are dual rank or single rank. Yes, timings are an issue too, as is the voltage required for the higher clocked DIMMS. It's a bit of a minefield.

Ive been looking through the ROG CROSSHAIR VI HERO(WI-FI AC) QVL and it seems that the only 32gb option (@3200mhz) G.Skill F4-3200C16Q-32GFXR, which is not available, and is for 4dimms...
Non of the Trident Z rgb is on the list, at all, (as I could find anyway)
Is it really that bad compatibility?
Might have to go with a 2x8gb after all! :lol:

Well, the QVL is a guide. It just means those DIMMS have been tested. That's not to say that DIMMS that aren't on the QVL will not work. It means that you may have to do a whole lot of tinkering around with timings, DIMM voltage and Memory controller.

But going with a tested set means you don't have to mess around with the DIMMS. Just pop them in and go.

While Trident G RGB's are not on the list. I can tell you as long as your getting 3200 cl14 (not the cl16) sticks they are almost surely Samsung B-die chips and are highly likely to work out of the box with a updated motherboard bios and a simple trip to bios to select DOCP (XMP) standard and rebooting. The work (and look) great on my Asus ROG Strix x370-f gaming. BTW they are not on the QVL for my board, but the non RGBs are. Same sticks, but prettier.
