Will a 638 pin S1g4 CPU work in a S1 socket.Being its 35 watts and old CPU was 25 watts?
Presario F500
Processor : Mobile AMD Sempron 3500+ @ 1800 MHz Socket S1 25w
Mainboard : Quanta 30D3
Chipset : nVidia GeForce Go 6100
Physical Memory : 1024 MB DDR2-SDRAM

Want to upgrade CPU to
AMD Phenom II N660 3 GHz Dual-Core HMN660DCR23GM Socket S1(S1g4) 35w

Add 1gb to give max of 2GB ram

No. None of the four Socket S1 revisions are interchangeable and you cannot use any CPUs that do not use the same revision as your socket. You can only use original S1 CPUs in your machine. There were several changes in the successive S1 revisions, the most major of which was changing from DDR2 to DDR3 for S1g4 units.

Your computer's information page only shows that it ever shipped with the Sempron 3500+. The 3500+ is a 90 nm, 25 watt part. There is no guarantee that the computer can adequately cool any CPUs using more than 25 watts which means using a 90 dual-core like a Turion 64 X2 would be dicey. Also, there is no guarantee that any of the 65 nm S1 chips like the 20 watt Athlon X2 TK-42 would work either since your chip is a 90 nm unit.

Long story short, don't upgrade this computer. Go buy yourself one that was made after 2007 if you want something faster.

I upgraded from a peece of sheet sempron to a turion x2 dual core and it works just fine. I'm thinking of upgrading to a S1g2. We'll see how that goes. The above author may be wrong. Just because someone calls themselves an authority doesn't necessarily make them smart or open minded. Mine situation is a case in point.

This thread is the better part of a year old why are you even commenting on it ? Maybe your laptop has a bigger psu, lucky enough to use same socket, has a cooler that can cope with added heat, motherboard that will actually support another chip. Laptops have so many variables that need to be considered when upgrading hardware as it is always a crap shoot what will work and what wont. You got lucky, simple as that. I'm not about to tell people to start tearing their laptops apart based on luck.
