Safe CPU Temperatures?

Howdy great peeps, me again,

Wanted to check if these temperatures are OK
I had set the voltage to Fixed on 1.2v with the I7 4790K overclocked to 4.4Ghz

The IHS couldn't go higher then 72c? But is it listed there?
(Several temperatures went over 72c, so making sure it's alright by asking here)

I turned to voltage too low earlier, and my display wouldn't even start up..
Thank god for the BIOS reset switch!

72C running Prime95 is fine - not great, but fine. If it goes into the 90s, you need to worry. I would be shooting for high 50s to mid 60s - the cooler you can keep the chip, the more you can stretch it. What are you using for a CPU cooler?

The Deepcool Neptwin.
It's strange since my old FX-6300 was overclocked from 3.5Ghz to 4.4Ghz,
and it never exceed 61c on 1.196V OR 1.396V - it was one of the two..
Whilst now my Intel has is just barely overclocked from 4.0Ghz to 4.4Ghz on ~1.200V
(4.4Ghz is even normal boost)...

Haswells have a reputation for running hot. Your DC has improved TIM, so will run cooler than the 4770K, but that doesn't mean cool in an absolute sense. I would have expected the Neptwin to keep it in the 60s, though. I would try re-applying the thermal paste and see if it makes a difference. I'm not sure how easy it would be, but you could also try adding a fan. Something like the 120mm push fan on the NH-D14.

Aaah ok I thought the FXs were hotter.
Well I mounted the cooler 2 days ago with the new CPU, making sure the surface was mirror clean with no dust.
Used the pea method to apply the thermal paste, so can't really understand there could be an error whilst I done it.

But it should be less temperature according to you?
Maybe I could try experimenting with the Voltage? (Keeping it low of course?)

Honestly, I don't think the chip is doing anything unusual - l wouldn't expect anything crazy to happen at anything 1.3 and lower (I don't recommend 1.3), I just expected lower temps with that cooler. I think your voltages are fine. I'll do some checking online and see if there's any reliable numbers for you CPU/HSF combo.

In case you need to know, my motherboard is the Asrock Z97 Extreme 4

I don't think however that re-applying thermal paste would help a lot.
Made sure I placed it correctly..

De nada. Pure Overclock tested on an i5-3570K OCed to 4.4GHz at 1.3v with ambient at 23C, and topped out at 68C. http://www.pureoverclock.com/Review-detail/deepcool-neptwin-cpu-cooler/5/

Did you use the paste that came with the cooler?

Nope this is the 2nd time I am using the cooler.
Applied Noctua cooling paste (Noctua NT-H1 paste)

But I am almost 100% sure I did it correctly.
1. Made sure the surface of the cooler & CPU was sparkling clean.
2. Put a dot on it (even tested it with 2 little mirrors so I had the exact amount).
3. Put the cooler straight on it, using some small force & very slight moving in rotation counter & clockwise
4. Used the mount to fasten it.

There couldn't really have gone much wrong there I think..
But still these temperatures I have are crazy.

Sorry for the radio silence - was at a trade show. Here is a recent article on OCing the 4790K vs the 4770K. It's not real encouraging. Their conclusion is that below 4.4 the DC definitely runs cooler, but that past that it shares the same temp curve. You may not be able to go over 4.4 or 4.5 on air, and I think that it indicates that your temps at 4.4 on Prime95 are probably not abnormal. Actually, looking at the charts, it looks like you're getting better temps than the testers and they were using a ginormous cooler.
