power up and enter the BIOS, set boot sequence to CD-ROM
drive first and reboot with the XP disk in the CD drive.
When prompted to "Press any key to boot from CD" press a
key. When the system comes up to a setup menu one of the
options will be to repair Windows XP using the repair
console, select this option. Select the keyboard driver
for your locale and then select the windows option listed,
typically it will be 1:\Windows XP Home/Professional;
enter the administrator password or simply press enter if
there is none. You should now be at a C:\Windows or
Windows\System prompt - type "chkdsk /r" without the
quotes and the check disk utility will run and repair any
problems it finds, hopefully. Sometimes you might receive
a message about unrepairable errors detected on disk.
Then it's a entirely new ball game.

good luck
