Safe temp for a 4890?

Just wondering what the max safe temperature is for a 4890 card. Just installed mine and it runs at 64C idle (with fan at 27%) and after about a minute of fur rendering it goes up to 93C, with fan at about 48%. At that point I killed the test, so I do not know how hot it can get. It is an msi factory oc board. I guess it can safely run that hot since the fan is not ramping up more? But what kind of temperature should I be scared of?

Technically speaking, the card can take up to 120 before it starts passing out. For my card it's idling at about 61C idle @ 32% fan speed and when under load it goes up to about 80C @ 48% fan speed. In this case, your cooler is not bad at all. Take note, my card is not factory OCed. However, I do notice that my xfx card's fan has a smaller hole compared to the other manufactures (that could be the reason for the reduced efficiency.

My 4850 has been hitting 100 celcius regularly in games if I don't ramp the fan to 100% Got it july 08 (i think) and so far it hasn't broken at those temps. You should be fine unless your cooler is too loud above 50%. I notice the failsafe system thing kicks in around 100 or 105, and it maxes out the fan speed so it doesnt melt the gpu or anything. You might wanna try manually setting fan speeds, and find the max speed where the noise doesn't bother you. Then see how hot it gets.

my sapphire 4890 (OC'ed to 925/1000) idles at 61C, and under load goes up to about 75-80C (40-50% fan speed). Ambient temps in my room range from 23-28C

my card has similar temps as astrodude.

i have it OC-ed to 900/1000, and it idles at 57c, and 75-80c ish under load well. i have my fan set at 43%.

I would rather not set the fan manually. It doesn't bother me much while gaming, but it is loud over 40% or so, and I don't want that all the time.

Maybe I can run it a little higher and see where it maxes out. Murdoc, where does the 120 number come from?

I would avoid furmark, It heats your gpu / vrm's to a level that will never be reached while gaming or anything else besides furmark. In 5min's my 4890 toxic (factory overclocked to 1.4volts 960/1050) went up to 85c on the core and over 135c on the vrm's!. I ran crysis warhead benchmark for 3hours and the card peaked at 71c, and vrm's peaked at 90c. In short uninstall furmark, why put your card through unneeded punishment?

What's vrms? My tools only show me one "gpu" temperature.

I wouldn't trust the fan to ramp up on its own. Why would you wait for the fan to say "oh it's getting rather hot I better speed up"? and then it speeds up to try and cool the heat down. Isn't it better to prevent an overheated GPU?

Yeah the noise is inconvenient with the fan at 80% or more but I'd rather have that that than to looking at the the monitor and see 88 C.

I find the fan on my sapphire 4870 512 seems to respond intuitively to load, not temperature. Mind you I have excellent airflow in my case, which may be keeping my temps lower on average (52c @ Idle, 80c @ load w/o V-sync)I tried setting the speed during OC when I first got the card and found it far too loud. Instead I enable V-sync whenever I can, and my card doesn't need to spool the fan up anymore it seems.

too many people freak out over GPU temps on 48xx cards... my 4850 runs idle at 80c and 85c under load (20% and 40% fan speed respectively), with fan turned to 60 i can drop it 30 degrees each. As long as its lower then 100 it should be fine, 120 is the breaking point.

I ran an overclocked 7950gt at 120 for a year with a stock cooler before it gave out.

my 4890 was clockin 61c idle 95c load on furmark until i did some case modifications made a hole for a fan on the side and underneath pushing cold air onto it from both sides (case on modded raised feet) and now im at 48c idle and 71c load. DO SOME CASE MODS FOR MORE FANS ITS WORTH IT

i have a new 4890

Well this post make me feel good about 40c idle & 52c Max, that running the fan at 70%, even at default 50% it never went above 60c.

btw, Is there any issue around running the fan upto 100% ect, apart from the noise ie. wear out or fail?. my PC runs pretty much around the clock, hopefully for several years on this gfx card

P.S. are there any good gadget or short cut to altering & monitoring this stuff
