My old desktop took a dump, so on my new system I go through and hook up my old HD's to the slave to claim my data and it worked fine untill I get to the drive where XP is installed. I get a OS not found error message on boot up. I'm confident that drive is undamaged, how do I keep my system from trying to load the OS on the salvaged drive?

If you've ever played with linux, one work around would be download a copy of knoppix, a live CD version of linux, burn it to a CD. You can then boot the from CD without affecting the installed OS. You can then burn the data from the HDD disk to a CD. I've done this on drives that wouldn't boot to recover data on the disk.
Another option would be to put the drive on the second IDE channel (likely the same channel as the CD drive)

Did you check the jumpers on the drive. If your master is set as CS your slave MUST BE ALSO. A drive set to Master on a CS buss will cause you problems.
