Hi guys,

So I just recieved a 1.5gb rar file, from a friend who I make music with. It was downloaded to my 2tb mechanical drive but I work on music projects on a samsung 750 evo ssd so I started extracting the rar (using winrar) to the samsung ssd. At 60% through the extraction winrar froze (something ive never experienced before) and froze the whole computer, I used task manager to end task, which worked. However, after this the samsung ssd has disappeared completely, doesnt appear in disk management or in device manager under disk drives. I have a different ssd for my OS and non music related programs and thats working fine as is the mechanical drive.

The first, and only, thing I've done so far is to restart my pc (boot time was significantly longer than usual) but the disk hasnt shown back up. Gonna try different SATA ports, the cable and samsung drive are only 2months old.

Rest of the specs if it helps

AMD8350FX processor
asus sabertooth 990fx r2.0
16gb ddr3 kingston ram
intel ssd (with os)
seagate 2tb hdd
gtx960 4gb graphics card
corsair 750w psu

UPDATE:
I changed the SATA port that the samsung ssd was plugged into (swapped with the cd drive) and that now appeared in the bios and appears fine. however, now, the intel ssd with the os on has disappeared! when I let it progress it said no boot manager and only gives an option to restart. I tried swapping the intel ssd sata port to another working one (that of the mechanical drive) and now the pc no longer shows any display whatsoever, doesnt load to bios. Im thinking this is a motherboard problem possibly?

UPDATE 2:
After testing the 6 SATA ports on the motherboard I've determined only 3 work, which is enough for the 2 SSD and the HDD :) Im guessing this may mean the motherboard is on its way out? Should I start saving to upgrade/replace?

Solution
It could be power issue or a port issue of some sort. You could get in touch with the motherboard manufacturer's customer support to see if you'd be able to sort it out, before you go for a whole new setup, but that's entirely up to you.
As for the suggested setups, unfortunately I can't recommend you any of them as I can't suggest devices which are not under the WD brand. :\
Hi oldtoby420 and welcome to tom'sHardware. :)

It sounds a bit weird to get 3 faulty SATA ports all at ones, but not impossible. Just as a precaution, I'd recommend that you backup your data and test all the drives for errors with a diagnostic tool, to see if anything alarming shows up.
You could also try resetting or updating your BIOS/UEFI, to see if that fixes things up.
Other than that it could be faulty cables rather than faulty ports so if you feel like it you could play around with different cables and ports as well.

Please let me know how everything goes.

Thanks for the reply and the welcome Boogieman! I have tried swapping cables also but no change in the freezing or in one or the other SSD not showing up, this led me to thinking it might be a power issue?

So I removed the wireless pci e card, a usb 3 hub pci card and a usb 2 hub pci card, plus disconnected the cd drive and the other usb devices connected to the motherboard and plugged in the mouse and keyboard usb cables only to the motherboard. The computer booted fine and didnt experience any crashes when transferring files and all 3 storage drives appeared to be working fine. I added a single wd elements 2tb usb 3 external drive and have backed up all the important files to it. Gonna try slowly adding one thing at a time to see whether there is a tipping point. The psu (corsair builder 750w) should have more than enough power for what Im trying to run?

I'm really impressed by your patience and troubleshooting. You're doing great, keep it up. Good job with backing up your files as well.
As for your question, yup, the PSU should have more than enough power for a regular build even if you have 2 GPUs.

The troubleshooting method you've chosen should be able to reveal the culprit. Please keep me updated. :)

Cheers :)

So the problem seems to be once I start adding the 2 usb hub cards (one is a 2 port usb3 pcie card and the other is a 5 port usb2 pci card) if they arent added in, both ssds and the hdd are working fine, no crashes, as soon as i add either of the usb cards, the pc wont even boot. This set up was working before tuesday. As its happening with both USB cards, im guessing this is a motherboard power issue? (both cards take power from motherboard with no option for direct connection to the psu)

I need the extra ports as my studio setup requires 12 usb ports (preferably 14 but 12 is minimum). If it is the motherboard, Im looking at either going to a i7 4770s with asrock z87 pro4 (loads of usb ports) with 16gb 2133mhz g.skillz DDr3 RAM or going for the i5 6500 on the MSI b150 gaming M3 wih 16gb corsair 2133 ddr4 RAM. Either of these should be an improvement on the current setup, I think, and can get them for very similar prices
