Samsung 840 PRO 512GB vs 840 EVO 500GB

Hi,
I am trying to decide what 500GB SSD I should get for my new rig/PC.

I have read some test benchmarks/reviews of the two SSD but still can't decide

In terms of price I don't really have a budget/limit (Unless there is very, very, little performance difference then I will buy the EVO which is cheaper)

So what do you think overall is the best in terms of Performance?

I will be using SSD for OS, some programs (ex Solidworks, Photoshop), but mainly I will have all my games stored on it (heavy gaming).

The benchmarks might show an advantage for the Pro, but the truth is that you'd have a hard time noticing the difference between 400 MB/s and 500 MB/s write speed in real life scenarios. I don't know what's the price difference, but if it's more than 150$ it would hard for me to give arguments for the Pro.

The 840 Evo is an improved version of the basic 840. It still sits below the 840 Pro. So the 840 Pro will still perform better - just by a smaller margin.

The Pro is technically better, but I'd be willing to put down serious money that you couldn't tell the difference in a blind test between the two 😉

840 Pro is better but the chance that you can feel it is very little, but nevertheless the 840 Pro is best in class.

This is a vido i did comparing the drives with other drives as well.
The 256gb and up models all have same read/write speed. Keep that in mind!

When it comes to SSDs, the main thing I look at is the 4K random write (QD32) performance, rather than the transfer speeds. Since 4K read speeds are always faster than 4K write by a bit, looking at 4K write speeds tells me the the 4K performance floor of an SSD. Transfer speeds, on the other hand, rarely come up in actual computer use. When they do come up, people may transfer 30GB or so. That will only take between 15 and 30 seconds, depending on the drive, since nearly all SSDs can transfer pretty quickly. Accessing and writing small, random files, however, is the meat and potatoes of your computer's existence, and the 4K performance readings really speak to that type of action. Another reason to give less weight to transfer speed than to 4K performance is that transfer speeds are invariably higher on drives with faster 4K performance, and they are invariable slower on drives with slower 4K performance.

So, how does this apply to the Pro vs EVO question? It all depends on the capacity you're looking at. If you are looking into the 250/256GB size, spend a little more on the Pro, but for larger capacities, take advantage of an EVO's lower price per Gigabyte. The Pro achieves a whopping 90,000 4K IOPS write, whereas the EVO's drive hits only 33,000 with the 120GB and 66,000 with the 250GB. But once the EVOs surpass 250GB (i.e. 500, 750, or 1TB), the EVO's 4K write performance becomes completely identical with the Pro's 4K write performance. Since the other specs of SSDs so closely track the 4K performance, you'll also notice that the other specs on the 500GB+ EVO drives are overall in line with even the 540GB Pro (including transfer speed).

the EVO uses TLC Nand, but in stress tests its just as reliable as MLC, and also, The EVO's Nand uses a new Turbo write algorithm that makes it perform as an SLC. The EVO also has the RAPID mode option which uses RAM to double the read and write speed, we've gotten numbers like 1GB/s Read and 800-900MB/s Write, 126,717 IOPS Random Read and 117,562 IOPS Random Write. At support we advise that the EVO is for consumer end-users, while the 840 Pro is for enterprise or small businesses because of the workload difference. We hate the "which is better" question, because the two are meant for two different uses.

GPU means graphics processing unit, so idk where you got that from since we're talking about SSDs. The TLC on the EVO is improved so its just as reliable as MLC on the PRO, and it also has the Turbowrite Algorithm that allows it to function as SLC when the Turbowrite is active. So in the end it comes down to the warranty, which like u said is 3 yrs for the EVO and 5 yrs for the PRO. We only send out certified drives when doing warranty exchange, not new ones, so it comes down to if you wanna spend $100 on 2 extra years of warranty.

The TLC in the 840 Evo isn't really anything special compared to the regular 840, though of course it's cheaper to manufacture. The real improvement is the way it's used, with SLC emulation (TurboWrite). But that doesn't make the TLC in the 840 Evo better than the MLC in the 840 Pro - the MLC is still just plain better. It's just that the difference doesn't really matter for a consumer SSD.

Exactly - and for me personally I would spend $100 on a longer warranty, but everyone values their data and time differently.

Oh ok, i misunderstood about the GPU, and i'm not saying the EVO's TLC is better than the PRO's MLC. I'm saying that its just as reliable as the MLC and that you shouldn't make your decision based soley on the fact that its TLC, which i've been seeing alot of ppl doing.

Exactly. I have the 840 non-pro in my laptop. By the time the warranty is up I expect 2Tb SSD's will be out at the same price pony and I wont be wanting a measly 500gb's. LoL
