Samsung 970 evo nvme m2 not being detected

I just built a PC and am trying to install windows. However, my nvme m2 ssd does not show up in BIOS (gigabyte x470 ultra gaming) and windows installation does not recognize any designated drivers.

What should I do?

Go to the product page for your motherboard model. Download the latest bios and update your bios to that version.

Then, find the PCI boot device settings in the bios and enable them. Also, you will need to most likely disable CSM (Compatibility support module) and enable UEFI boot and you need to make sure it's all configured correctly.

What windows version are you running?

What is your bios version?

Hi,

Thanks for the response.

I updated the BIOS to the most recent option using Q-Flash and I am trying to install Windows 10 using the usb method. In my BIOS the boot drive is UEFI for the usb w Windows. CSM is diabled. I poked around in the BIOS for a while and am not sure how to get to PCI boot settings. Under the storage tab, there is no nvme, it just says 6 empty SATA slots.

Ive read elsewhere that I need to download an nvme driver? Is there a way to do that on a new pc?

Thanks for your help.

There are SATA and NVMe type M2 drives. What type drive do you have there ?

See this from the manual for that board

1 x M.2 connector (Socket 3, M key, type 2242/2260/2280/22110 SATA and PCIe 3.0 x4/x2* SSD support) (M2A_SOCKET)

1 x M.2 connector (Socket 3, M key, type 2242/2260/2280 PCIe 2.0 x4/x2 SSD support) (M2B_SOCKET)

If you put a SATA drive into the M2B socket, change sockets.

Oh, that seems to be the problem. The 970 samsung evo is pcie m2 but i put it in the A slot that is Sata. I will try switching it to the b slot that supports pcie.

*edit* just saw that slot A also has pcie support so not sure why it isnt working. Is it possible it was not installed properly?

Yes, making sure it's installed in the correct slot, one that supports PCI NVME, is a pretty good idea. Some slots support both but some only support one or the other, and you can have either or both on the same board. Try the correct slot and I'm pretty sure your problem should go away so long as you've done the rest of the recommended configuration.

One of those slots is only PCI 2.0, and your drive is PCI 3.0. I don't know that these are backwards/forwards compatible like x16 slots for graphics cards or not. I'll have to check into that. Never even thought about it before.

I would probably make sure you are installed in the M2A socket though, since it supports 3.0 speeds, which are much faster than 2.0 speeds. Even if the other socket supports it, your speeds would be limited.

After taking a look, the manual doesnt seem to specify what type of pcie is supported it just says both are good for pcie.

The ssd is currently in the a socket anyways though. Will reseat it when i get back from work and hope it fixes

Actually, it specifically DOES, as Karenjoly posted previously.

Storage Interface

1 x M.2 connector (Socket 3, M key, type 2242/2260/2280/22110 SATA and
PCIe 3.0 x4 (Note 2)/x2 SSD support) (M2A_SOCKET)

1 x M.2 connector (Socket 3, M key, type 2242/2260/2280 PCIe 2.0 x4/x2 SSD
support) (M2B_SOCKET)

6 x SATA 6Gb/s connectors
Support for RAID 0, RAID 1, and RAID 10

Actually, the manual does too. It's in the specifications chart at the very beginning. But regardless, all that matters is that you use the M2A socket and configure the settings properly and yes, seated correctly would be a requirement as well. LOL. Good luck, hope to hear it went ok.

This is what the manual has..
Š 1 x M.2 connector (Socket 3, M key, type 2242/2260/2280/22110 SATA and PCIe
x4 (Note 2)/x2 SSD support) (M2A_SOCKET)
Š 1 x M.2 connector (Socket 3, M key, type 2242/2260/2280 PCIe x4/x2 SSD
support) (M2B_SOCKET)
Š 6 x SATA 6Gb/s connectors
Š Support for RAID 0, RAID 1, and RAID 10

Do you know if it would work in the B-slot too?

if one doesnt work, try other one, one goes through chipset and the other through cpu...they may seem same, but compatibilities with drives differ...compaatibility issues can be resolved with bios update
if it wont work, i can send you nvme samsung efi module so u can inject it to your bios...but usualy mainboard vendors add support pretty fast on new mobos

there is also posibility with a bios glitch....wouldnt be first time i saw that....
lets say u use port A...drive wont detect, u move it to slot B and bios finds it, u install windows on it, then move it back to slot A and it will work

slot B is slow....so if it will work, make sure u try to go back to A slot

Thanks for your help guys. Im just really dumb. Watched a youtube video that attached the ssd to the heatsink and nailed both to mobo. But there was a smaller nail to nail the ssd specifically to the mobo. Installing windows as we speak.
