My 1TB WD_BLACK SN850x (with WD_Black heatsink) got to 62C when writing 50GB of data onto it.
It idles at 48C
I have an almost passive fan curve where fans only start spinning slowely when CPU gets above 50C, so my case is a bit warmer inside than it could be with a more aggressive airflow and thus my cool the m.2 better.

Was your 65C under load or at idle ?

I upgraded my laptop and installed a 2TB 970 EVO Plus in place of the 500GB WD drive. Since it's in a slim laptop, there's no room inside for an M.2 heatsink.

The 970 EVO Plus reached 65C one day when I was on holiday and I switched on the laptop in a hotel room before the AC eventually hauled the temperature down from 38C/ 100F.

I was transferring roughly 40GB of RAW and JPG files from a day's shoot on CF and SD cards over to the NVMe drive when it reached 65C, so it was under a continuous write load, followed by a continuous read load to verify the data.

I'm pretty sure the 980 Pro in my rendering rig sits at nearly 70 C under load, but I can't confirm until I return home. The 980 is fitted with a passive heatsink.
