That depends on what market segment this phone is intended for. The specs may be underwhelming compared to the $350 Nexus 5 but would not be so bad compared to devices retailing in the neighborhood of $250 like the N4 when Google decided to clear their stock.

@InvalidError: right. From the specs it's pretty obvious this isn't a flagship model. Why anyone would assume it is, or even 2nd tier...well, that's their own idiocy.

You have that backwards! The iPhone 5c is Apple's answer to lower cost android phones. Let me guess, you are an iFanatic?

What's the deal with having an 8 GB storage and then not allowing apps to be moved or loaded from the SD? Not even the whole 8GB would be available as it is, with all the Samsung apps and the Google apps (which have grown a lot) it makes no sense.

I filled up my newest tab's 16GB after adding just my standard addons, I got a bunch of updates available notices and part way through it came up with an insufficient space error. On my tab I just used an app to move to storage to solve it, so I know 8GB would not be enough.

Samsung does have some nice enhancements like floating windows and multi tasking, so having to blast all that with a custom ROM seems a shame.

Another android article and yet another childish trollish post by the resident troll named otacon.

1) this is not a flag ship phone therefore the specs are great.
2) display size is perfect for those who need a big screen and if they need a small screen then samsung has those too. You put down a company for offering choice which means you are a dumb consumer.
3) The more phones they put out the more choice there is for us consumers. Anyone against choice is against themselves.

There is such a thing as too much of a good thing: with too many different devices on the market covering any given market segment, the market gets fragmented, each model gets fewer sales, development costs get amortized over fewer units and unit prices end up higher than they could/should be.

True but Samsung can do this because they make their own RAM, flash storage, screens, cameras, processors...it costs less for them to make it all in the first place, while everyone else is outsourcing these parts.

I was about to reply the same thing. You took the words right from my fingers.

While Samsung may be able to cut corners on manufacturing costs by manufacturing most components themselves, the pricing on their devices is usually still at a premium compared to other companies focusing on only 1-2 devices in a given category instead of 3-4 like Samsung.

If the Grand 2 follows in the Grand 1's footsteps, it will cost nearly as much as the N5.

It is obviously going to be a entry level phone, which any decent company has entry, mid and high end phones.

It will probably be a pretty nice system for those who don't want to pay as much for a S4.

Is that really so hard to believe? Every manufacturer is shipping flagship devices with more or less all the same essential specs shortly after the components become officially available on the market so there isn't much really worth looking into between SoC product cycles.

So, the next wave of new major launches will likely occur in mid-2014.

Samsung also rebadges quite a few phones to save on production costs. Selling the same phone on 2 or more carriers under different names. Don't assume just because the phone is on a different carrier, with a different name, that it was made specifically for that carrier.

Re-badged versions still belong in one of the 3-4 platform models Samsung ends up having to split market between.

If you go through the parts list, there is usually only a $25-50 difference between a $250 phone and a $600 one. Where do you suppose the bulk of the remaining $300 premium goes? R&D and production tooling for the premium lower-volume models and the extra profit margin to justify bothering with fragmenting the market in the first place.

"Grand"? Shudda gone with "Econophone" or "Miser-Tab" or "Budget-Bar". I dunno much about smartphones but even at my level of ignance those specs are pretty lame.

You know, it kind of helps to not have 400 different models from Samsung, just having 3 from apple isn't THAT bad. At least they put their focus and attention on those 3 products. The quality over quantity argument I guess is void this generation in Samsung fanboy's minds? Not saying Samsung doesn't put out quality

Everyone and their mother is putting quad core Snapdragon 400s in their phones, while the dual core version is faster for most use cases...

Why can't you move your apps to SD Card? This phone comes with JB v4.3 so it supports App2SD, I think. My 4.3 Note 3 has support for App2SD without rooting.
