No matter what I try my Inspiron 570 detects my Sansung EVO 840 as Seagate 600. The amd sata controller detects st240hm0-00-1g5152. I think my sofware (Win10) is up to date for bios/controllers. Tried remove and reinstall, no joy. Best I can tell the EVO 840 runs Ok - my problem is that I cannot run something like Samsung magician because the bios detects Seagate. I also have Samsung F3 that correcftly detects. Also Samsung EVO 850 that correctly detects. The problem is just with the samsung 840 250gb drive detection.
Device remove from Device manager or physical remove/install changes nothing.
Ran DELL and AMD autodetect for drivers.

ADDL INFO: I have same software on 1TB Samsung 850 that correctly detects and 250gb Samsung 840 that detects as Seagate 600. Removing 850, does not affect 840 detection.
From LINUX:
block: name = sda, path = /class/block/sda
dev = 8:0
range = 16
block device: bus = scsi, bus_id = 1:0:0:0 driver = sd
path = /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:11.0/ata2/host1/target1:0:0/1:0:0:0
vendor = ATA
model = Samsung SSD 850 <<<<<<<<<<<<<
rev = 1B6Q
type = 0
>> block.5: /dev/sda
>> block.5.1: /dev/sda geo
dev = /dev/sda, fd = 4
open ok, fd = 4
/dev/sda: ioctl(geo) ok
/dev/sda: ioctl(block size) ok
/dev/sda: ioctl(disk size) ok
>> block.5.2: /dev/sda serial
serial id len: 20
block: name = sdb, path = /class/block/sdb
dev = 8:16
range = 16
block device: bus = scsi, bus_id = 2:0:0:0 driver = sd
path = /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:11.0/ata3/host2/target2:0:0/2:0:0:0
vendor = ATA
model = ST240HM000-1G515 <<<<<<<<<<<<<< BUT THIS IS SAMSUNG 840 EVO ???
rev = C675
type = 0
Any ideas ?
Thanks, Howie

From what i see does it come with any drivers ( i know stupid but sandisk did that a while ago) because otherwise samsung may be using components of a seagate but id see the problem u still got 240 gigs of ssd space just go crazy and do what u want dont think whats the problem ?

Hi Thanks for taking the time..
No, it d/n come with any drivers.
I could be looking at it wrong, but it seems to me the Inspiron 570 bios is charged with detection. I know that the bios, win10, and linux all report the device as ST240HM0-00-1g5152
AFAIK, the device works ok and has the correct capacity. I can boot Windows or linux in under 20sec on either the 840 or 850 ssd.
The problem is that I would like to use the Samsung utilities, like Magician. But the utility only handles samsung devices, not the Seagate ST240.
It is NOT a biggie, I just would like to see the device detected correctly (as the Samsung EVO 850 is). Strangely, I have not seen any hits on this-
which seems strange.
One possibility is I ran dumb and happy for some time with the Samsung 840 SSD until i acquired a bigger 850 SSD and tried to run the Samsung disk utility and ran the fact it would not recognize the 840 back to the bios device detection. My guess is the AMD Sata Controller -or- the BIOS. But if it works for the newer 850 SSD, seems it would work for the older 840 (sigh)
Thanks, Howie

I think Samsung is off the hook as it is the Dell bios.

When I try to select email Dell support I recv a msg that I am off warranty, so it seems they do not care.
Likewise, I have the current bios (A06) installed.
Since I am the only one reporting this, will just live with it.
Tks, Howie

Samsung merged with Seagate. You'll notice alot of Seagate external drive with physical Samsung drives and Seagate drives labelled as Samsung.
Its because they are the same.
