As long as the comment is not taken from Apple as an excuse for another lawsuit, it should be fine, though I don't think many will like it. Obviously Samsung is not leading in every sense, but the addition of a different point of view and products to the market other than one phone, one size, one interface is always welcome and benefits the costumer.
Edit: By the way. My opinion is straight from the Source. The original source also gives examples of Samsung Leading, not just following (but Zak omitted like 99% of the article anyways...)

Why can't video game industry follow Steve job market research mentality. EA market research, the target audience needs more Call of Duty. let's lower the threshold and make games for the casual.

Zak, this brings your "journalism" to a new low.
"We get most of our ideas from the market," Samsung EVP Kim Hyun-suk told The New York Times during an interview. "The market is a driver, so we don’t intend to drive the market in a certain direction."

This doesn't mean that Samsung is content with following Apple. It means Samsung is content with giving consumers/customers what they want.

It means Samsung isn't trying to shove something down the consumer's throat.. As with the case Microsoft and Win8. (Not hating on Win8, just a fact..)

They have a larger market share, have better products and spend more $$$ on R&D. Does this sound like a company content with following crApple?

^+1. this looks like a cheap stab at Samsung by a fanboy journalist. unless you can quote samsung saying they are content following apple - do not say it. the quote was clearly "We get most of our ideas from the market"

Man, just looking at your post history is hilarious. Apple fanboyism at its best.

Anyway, anything you say can't change the fact that Zak writes articles that stretch the truth by a LOT. Almost always in Apple's favor.

Yeah, company that has best screens on the market and spends gazillions on R&D, recently demoed flexible OLED screens is only "a follower", right.

And "driven by market" immediately becomes "driven by apple".
Because, you know, when PDAs era was over, combining a phone into "a kind of PDA" wasn't obvious.
And, oh oh oh, we didn't have tablets let alone multitouch back in 90th (which cost 2k+ $ at that time).

Yeah, the entire tone of the source article is quite different.
Additionally, it clearly states that Samsung does create new markets (phablet given as an example).

I would recommend that everyone just click through to the source story; it is not very long and quite a bit more balanced.

Except CoD is published by Activision, not EA.

I have to agree, this article has TROLL written all over it. Twisting a clear statement however you wish just to get more clicks is a a mark of poor journalism. At least don't post the original statement when you do that, it would give you a bit more credibility as an OPINION article instead of a REPORT.
Posting the original statement AND your twisted interpretation of it just makes it ridiculous, and people called you out.

Samsung also outspends Apple on research and development
Samsung is involved in MANY more business areas, including chip fabrication. R&D for their fabs, for instance, may be a significant amount of their R&D spending. Apple's R&D spending will be much more focused. Still, with the amount of cash Apple has, it's disappointing that they aren't spending more. It almost seems like they don't know what to do with the money.

I don't think Zak will ever find another job as a technology Journalist or Journalist of any kind, This is his first and last job as journalist of any kind, from here "Best of Media" To McDonald or any other lower chain of fast food trash.

Zak, this brings your "journalism" to a new low.
...this looks like a cheap stab at Samsung by a fanboy journalist.

Did you read the entire article, or just the headline? The article casts Samsung in a very positive light. Personally, I own several Samsung mobile devices, and despise Apple because I'm a PC technological elitist and I prefer a computer to be a computer, rather than an appliance like a toaster. The tone of the article was positive for Samsung. You'd have to stretch to see it otherwise.

Sigh. More of Zak Islam and his inaccurate apple promoting articles. When will Tom's ever fire this guy?

Anyway, anything you say can't change the fact that Zak writes articles that stretch the truth by a LOT. Almost always in Apple's favor.

How, precisely, does the article promote Apple over Samsung? It draws contrasts between the stated approaches of the executives of both companies and relays pertinent facts regarding market dominance and leadership. I can't speak for News or Editorial, but this looks like a solid article about a piece in the New York Times.

Here at Tom's, we encourage constructive criticism and feedback from our members. If you take issue with an article and have valid concerns, we want to hear about them. But I've seen a lot of undeserved angst lobbed lately at Zak Islam from this community for writing articles covering the subject of mobility in recent months. Our Rules of Conduct prohibit personal attacks, and that covers not only you, the user, but also our reporters. Some of the accusations I've seen have been remarkably unfounded regarding articles written by Zak Islam - namely that he writes more Apple articles than anything else. His Samsung articles alone for the past 3 months dwarf the Apple ones by almost 30%. I know that because I've seen the anti-Zak hate and I've gone back and counted them.

So, with all due respect, chill on the Zak-attacks, and try to keep discussion on topic. Thanks!

Zak's headline is misconstrued, but I think this backlash stems from him having a different notion of what it means to lead a market. Apple's efforts to find new demand in a market are quite different from seeking out what customers say they want. Sales is a different notion of leadership, & diversifying into niche tastes is another way to be called a leader. And as for comparing R&D, a lot of Samsung's is hardware, while Apple is focused on design, both software & overall. Apple has got to keep their ecosystem/garden growing, while Samsung will roll with the market.

Both within Zak's own article & the ensuing comments there is a mess of concepts of leadership, & saying Samsung is "Following Instead of Leading" & fine with it is a misinterpretation of the interview.
