Wrist based comms devices are the next natural progression I think. I think we're starting to surpass tech thought up in the original star trek now.

OK -- watch phones have been around for many years, though most of them have been fairly low quality China-made models. The question I think is whether we will now see the big names produce higher quality watch phones.

In fairness the communicators in Star Trek did surface to orbit communications with millisecond delay, so despite smart-watches being more portable, I would disagree that we've passed them yet. That comlink has the equivalent of a long-range high-powered satellite in it's casing. Still these watches are beginning to become practically valuable..
