sandisk ssd not working correctly/slow

Purchased a sandisk SSD 240gb today, had no intentions of making it my boot drive since I didn't have enough space for everything so just wanted to copy the important programs over to the SSD that I want to run quickly (some games, some poker programs etc). Had to use my CD rom sata cables as the inside of my pc is an absolute mess and I couldn't see spares or a bracket to attach the SSD to so its pretty much just hanging there. Used disc management to create the new volume etc. Used the hwinfo program to check and make sure I had the correct sata cables which I did, it says its sata 6gb/s which from what I gather means SATA III so no problems there. Used AS SSD Benchmark software to check the speed that my SSD was running at, it came back with terrible results when I tested. I'm not great at reading and understanding this info but from what I gather from other results mines are very bad. I've tried running fortnite to see the startup speed and it's literally the same as my HDD speed. Am I wrong to just drag and drop folders to the SSD, should I be using a program to transfer folders/programs between drives? Regardless of that though, the speed test results are clearly still bad. Any help would be much appreciated in getting this SSD to start programs up much more swiftly!

Up to 20x faster than a typical hard disk drive
240 GB read/write speeds of up to 530 MB/s/430 MBs

this was the advertised specs. Was I wrong to assume that I would get atleast a fraction of the value they advertise? £55 for what? Easy refund based on what i'm seeing from other posters regarding this product.

The AHCI mode is the one that is enabled, there was a selection between that and RAID and another one I forget (im not the most tech savvy guy) but the AHCI one was definately selected.

As for the free space, literally over 99% free space, only 500mb used.

Checking the BIOS again its saying that port 2 (the SSD port), the power options are all enabled but there are other options 'hot plug' which are disabled. IDK what that means. Isn't hot plugging what im doing when im just yoinking the cd rom drive out and putting the sata cables in the SSD drive? It didn't feel like that was what I was supposed to be doing in the first place but from what i've read its perfectly fine to use the CD rom drive sata cables for the SSD. Is it possible somewhere along the line of the disc management part that i've just not clicked the correct button and the drive isn't set up properly? I've tried using the sandisk software to check for updates and firmware etc but it says everything is fine.

Something I just thought of, was I supposed to change the SATA cables to another motherboard port from the ones they were in with the cd rom? I just left the other side of the cables alone as it was a mess in there and wasn't 100% sure what I was doing.
