Sanyo 4900 "Location" Feature

I recently upgraded from a Sanyo 4700 to
a 4900 and noticed it has a LOCATION
featured that can be turned off.

What are the pros and cons of turning
this feature off? And will turning
this feature off mean less drain on
the battery.

What does this feature do anyway?

No effect on battery life. If on, then services (which don't exist yet)
will be able to ascertain your approximate location in order to offer
things like directions or nearest restaurant of a type without you
having to enter your address. E911 can get your location whether you
have set the feature on or off for other uses.

Right now, not much either way. That feature isn't active for
anything commercial, and not many 911 call centers are upgraded to
use it, either (you couldn't disable the 911 use anyway).

Basically, it enables network-side services to query the phone for
its current location. Not literally. The phone sends the raw data,
and the service/application uses that data to determine the location.

And that, in turn, means it only carries any load when you authorize
such a query. 911 is federally mandated. No "opt out" ability to
that. But we're looking into things like "enhanced" directory
services and roadside rescue. Those would be voluntary.
