Radeons are the only answer for bitcoin, litecoin, feathercoin mining. I would advise against mining bitcoins at the moment because the difficulty has increased so much.
Try litecoin mining or feathercoin mining or one of the other currencies

-Usually best to join a mining pool, find one you like
A word about what I have learned about mining,
-Find a mining program you can use. I like this one, its easier for newbs like me to use.

-Monitor your temps- with something like Gpu-z. try to keep it at a temperature you like

I try to keep my 7950 sapphire vapor x below 60C on the gpu and below 65C on the power delivery vrm1 and vrm 2 on the gpu.
-Make sure you set your power setting to stay always on and never sleep. And in advanced options make sure you change the hard drive sleep time to like 5000 minutes (I thought my miner was crashing but the hard drive was sleeping)
-In Amd overdrive you may have to allow power to go up +5% to + 8% for it to be stable while mining.
-Search the internet for mining settings for the radeon card you end up getting
I like Intensity 16, worksize 128, thread concurrency 22000 for my 7950 (this value- thread concurrency will be higher most likely for a 290X.)
