Sapphire 6850, screen turn off, immediate crash

No overclocking. All the temperatures are fine. Tried a clean install of Radeon drivers.

This crash has been bugging me for a long time. It usually occurs while gaming but not always. Also occurred while viewing flash videos and even just simple images. Appears to be happening in random. I can have a few days without a crash or a couple of hours with 3 crashes.

Description:

The monitor turns off abruptly as if it isn't receiving a signal. Sound will continue for about 10 seconds and will then loop. After that the only way to get back to normal is a hard reset. Just hitting the reset button doesn't work. The PC resets but the monitor doesn't turn back on. I can see by looking at the hard drive led that the this reboot is stuck somewhere it doesn't get to load windows. The only way to get things back to normal is completely power off the machine and power it back on again.

After I'm back in Windows I get a "the system has recovered from a serious error" message:

Event viewer doesn't show anything else because apparently the crash takes windows down instantly. Using Whocrashed, I get the following:

I am pretty helpless diagnosing this crash. No logs and and black screen give very little information. How can I find out what runs at ntoskrnl.exe +0x7CC40 ? Why does whocrash blame two different modules for the crash (the kernel and ATI driver)?

I feel that the fact that a hard reset is necessary might give some clues but I have no experience with these types of crashes, it's also impossible for me to try and reproduce.

Any help is very much appreciated.

The first possibility that comes to mind is RAM. Reseat your RAM. Run Memtest86 on it, one stick at a time if necessary.
Another possibility is your PSU. I don't believe Coolermaster makes a "good" 600W unit, and if it is any variety of "Extreme Power [Plus]," it is only a notch or two above junk. You aren't stressing it, but if is out of spec, you could get random reboots.

I did ran memtest, everything was fine.

I actually bought this 600w unit thinking it would solve these problems. Earlier I had a no name PSU with 24V on one 12V rail and this one has two 18V rail. After all this, I really doubt it's the PSU. In my futile attempts to reproduce the crash I ran both furmark and prime95 at the same time to try and get the machine to draw maximum power and it never crashed.

Anyway, maybe I didn't explain myself clearly but these are not random reboots, these are basically BSOD's (only that I cannot see the actual blue screen).

Hi,

I don't think the PSU is the problem because I was having the same problems with another PSU before I switched to this one. I believe the source of the problem is somehow related to Flash. I recently disabled Flash hardware acceleration and haven't experienced any crash since (though it hasn't been long and crashes can't be reproduced so I cannot be sure that this is the solution).

Do you experience the crashes with specific applications? It mostly happens to me when viewing Flash videos and playing Starcraft 2 and Skyrim.

I had a similar issue with a sapphire 6950 card and it turned out the card was defective

I Don't have the problem anymore and idk how or why , but sometimes it crashes like when I start a new game for the first time since the resolution is not the same , also I keep Sapphire TRIXX working all the time :/ my bios is 013.010.000.003 , hope I helped
