Sapphire R9 290 Tri-x OC Heat

Dear all,

I have just received and installed a Sapphire R9 290 Tri-X OC.

Within 3 minutes of starting up Battlefield 4 it had reached 88 Degrees Celsius, and the fans were at 81%.

I am yet to see this anywhere else, even after a 20 minute loop on intense purpose-built GPU testing software! I have it installed in a BitFenix prodigy, which has great airflow.

Surely this isn't right?! Any help will be immensely appreciated.

bf4 increases cpu and gpu heat, so it's likely that your cpu temps are affecting your gpu temps while playing bf4, as when you just do a gpu stress test, you are only loading the gpu, and not creating extra heat from the cpu.

88 degrees is a normal temp for that card, especially in such a small case and there really isnt much you can do to help temps aside from replacing the thermal paste or finding more ways to increase airflow

Compared to even a normal mid-sized case, your case has poor airflow, no matter what fans you are using. It's just one of the problems of the small form factor

to get proper airflow for that card, you'd have to remove BOTH hard drive cages and put 2 140mm (im pretty sure it supports them) intakes, then put 2 exhaust fans at the top, and an exhaust at the back with fairly good high airflow fans (think the back only supports 120mm

this is about the only orientation that will give you adequate airflow for that card

Those cards are made to run around 90C aren't they?

err well, better temps. your temps at the moment are in no way endangering your card, as it was made to run at 94 degrees before throttling

make sure to keep an eye on cpu temps as well as gpu temps, as if your gpu is that hot and throwing air all over your case, your cpu is bound to be suffering as well

Yeah that is a really hot running card to use in a small case like that especially with the open cooler on that card. It's gonna blow all that heat right into the case :-/ Not exactly ideal...
