Question SAS HDD's acting out

Hello everyone,

Yesterday I got a email-message from my OMV that a SMART test had failed on 1 of my SAS HDD's.

When I got upstairs, there was a annoying sound coming from the HDD bay (attached link)

I disconnected disk by disk (and rebooting each time) to try to identify the problem disk.

I started manually SMART testing each one. Turns out there where actually two disks that didn't pass the test.

Luckily I have a 2 partity Snapraid set up, so all was well.

I replaced the two malfunctioning HDD's with other ones I had laying around (second hand).

When I booted the sound just reappeared, making me think the problem is not with the HDD's.

I know HDD's aren't supposed to make such a beeping sound, so this sound has to come from my mobo right?

However I still baffled as to how a possibly malfunctioning mobo can lead to two failed SMART test of 2 different HDD's?

My set-up:

Supermicro mobo X11SSQ
32gb ram
I7-6700
8 SAS drives commanded by LSI9210
1 SATA OS drive

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

If you suspect it to be your motherboard, do you have a POST speaker hooked up to the board?

If I were you, I'd roll up a sheet of A4 paper into a cylinder, hold one end of the tube to your ear while the other end is used to probe for the source of the sound.
