No, you are fine with the one you have - all SATA is backwards compatible. It is only if you were using an SSD or SATA3 HDD would it matter.

Whats the current preffer burning device & media ? I held off looking into this whwn buildimg my pc and tonight I realised my dvdrw (ihas) used sata 1.
To be honest, I just use the free software for burning- FreeBurner or ImgBurn (for ISO). AS for media, get a good brand name if the stuff you are burning is vital. For paid for software, I'd go for Nero for all round use.
