Is there any real world speed difference between SATA II SSD and a SATAIII SSD. I understand they are capable of more, but is it really likely you will hit 3gb/s anyway nevermind 6gb/s?

Solution

Right.

(just for illustration purposes)

Significant difference.

I have a SATA II SSD, and 3 x SATA III SSD's.
It is very noticeable.

A SATA III SSD will be hampered when connected to a SATA II port.

I found some difference, but not a lot. My Samsung 470 will max out the SATA II spec. 298MBps. My Samsung 840pro was able to do about 530MBps. My real world (gaming) difference was next to nothing.

Big difference when you stop using a spinning disk. But moving from a SATAII to a SATAIII didn't do much to my load times. A second or so at best.

Idk. I had my OS on an old 7200.10 250GB drive for the longest time. My OS is currently on my 470, and it doesn't feel different at all. I get the feeling I just don't use windows/computers that much. I have a (stock clocks) 3570K, 16GBs of ram, R9 280, just to surf and play TF2. Sad.

I have a similar system, apart from the R9.
Opening a moderately complex Excel file here at home is near instantaneous. Excel lives on one SSD, the file on a different SSD.
Opening that exact same Excel file at work (Xeon, HDD) takes some several seconds to open.

There's a reasonable difference. 'Noticing' is subjective so difficult to say, but it's certainly plausible that some people will notice. It's not as big a difference as the difference between an HDD and an SDD.

Put another way, it's not worth upgrading a motherboard for, if your motherboard only supports SATA II. Or if the SATA II SSD is significantly cheaper, it's might not be worth paying the extra money for a SATA III SSD, but then again it depends on what's important to you.

Thanks guys. I have a sata 2 motherboard and was just wondering how much performance improvement i could potentially get.

Not important to upgrade then, ill just upgrade when i get a new cpu and motherboard.
